Summary

Under direct supervision from Parking & Transportation Services staff, participates in the University's bus driver training program. Learns the skills necessary to provide bus transportation services for University employees, students, and visitors and develops an understanding of the University's transportation system and effective passenger safety. Monitors equipment and performs limited maintenance. This is a 6-month fixed-term career path position.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Develops skills necessary to drive a university-owned bus, providing safe and efficient transportation to the university community and its visitors.
  2. Performs routine vehicle inspection and maintenance including checking the oil, fuel, brakes, lights, windshield wipers, and water and tire pressures.
  3. Provides information and other general assistance to the university community and its visitors.
  4. Maintains records of work performed; makes timely reports of accidents, incidents, and unusual occurrences.
  5. Participates in special events and park-and-ride operations.
  6. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED; no previous experience required. Certification/Licensure: New Mexico Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Learner's Permit for Class B with Passenger Endorsement.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Records maintenance skills.
  • Ability to understand and follow safety procedures.
  • Knowledge of basic vehicle inspection and maintenance including tire pressure, checking oil and water levels.
  • Ability to safely and efficiently operate a loaded passenger bus.

Conditions of Employment

  • Possession of a valid New Mexico driver's license is a requirement for this job.
  • Must obtain a NM CDL Learner's Permit with Passenger Endorsement prior to start date.
  • Must have and maintain a clean driving record.
  • Must pass a pre-employment criminal background check.
  • Must obtain a New Mexico Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with a Passenger Endorsement within 6 months from date of hire.
  • Must comply with all provisions of DOT Regulation 49 CFR Parts 40 and 382, including random drug and alcohol testing.
  • Employees who provide services or work in patient care or clinical areas are required to be in compliance with the University's influenza vaccination requirement.
  • Successful candidate must submit to post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history check.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

  • Physical requirements must be in compliance with all provisions of DOT Regulation 49 CFR Parts 40 and 382.
  • Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions.
  • Work may involve moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.

The University of New Mexico provides all training required by OSHA to ensure employee safety.
