The following statements are intended to describe, in broad terms, the general functions and responsibility levels characteristic of positions assigned to this classification. Drives a 15-person van, or its general equivalent, to transport persons for a specified UNM community service acitivity or program. Performs routine vehicle maintenance, and reports non-routine problems as detected. Works flexible hours as as appropriate to program requirements, and may be required to remain on-call during a program week.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Operates a 15-person van or its equivalent in size and/or load capacity to transport persons to and from specified destinations, as directed.
  2. Performs routine vehicle maintenance, such as checking oil, water, and tires; reports any non-routine problems or malfunctioning equipment to management.
  3. Follows specified instructions, procedures, and standards for the efficient and safe operation of the vehicle, and for the care and safety of passengers.
  4. Conforms to all federal, state, and local traffic laws and regulations governing the operation of a commercial van for passenger use.
  5. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Less than high school; at least 1 year of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
  • Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Skill in the operation of commercial passenger vans or equivalent.
  • Ability to follow routine verbal and written instructions.
  • Knowledge of the greater Albuquerque area and surrounding areas.
  • Ability to perform routine maintenance on small commercial vehicles, and to identify vehicle problems and malfunctions.
  • Knowledge of requirements and standards related to the safe and efficient operation of light commercial vehicles.
  • Knowledge of basic first-aid and/or CPR techniques.
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local traffic laws and regulations governing the operation of a commercial passenger vehicle.

Conditions of Employment

  • Ability to secure and maintain a valid UNM Driver's License.
  • This position is represented by a labor union and is subject to the terms and conditions of the CWA Collective Bargaining Agreement.
  • Successful candidate must submit to post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history check.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

  • Light physical effort. Requires handling of average-weight objects up to 10 pounds or some standing or walking. Effort applies to no more than two (2) hours per day.
  • Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions.
  • Work may involve moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.

The University of New Mexico provides all training required by OSHA to ensure employee safety.
