Summary

Supervise all facets of the operational maintenance activities of the campus arboriculture program, such as; shrub and tree hazard evaluation, landscape planting, installation, maintenance, renovation activities, chemical treatments and landscape fertilization's. Maintains campus tree nursery, inventories, and records of campus trees.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Supervises tree, shrub, and plant programs, including tree pruning, deadwooding, cable-bracing, utility clearance, removal, repair, fertilization, and other chemical treatments.
  2. Conducts plant diagnosis and tree hazard evaluations.
  3. Implements and maintains comprehensive landscape plans; supervises landscape maintenance, renovation, planting, and installation of landscape projects.
  4. Supervises personnel which typically includes recommendations for hiring, firing, performance evaluation, training, work allocation, and problem resolution.
  5. Responds to inquiries and researches and resolves problems related to transactions handled by the unit; serves as liaison with other constituencies in the resolution of day-to-day administrative and operational issues.
  6. Develops operating goals and objectives for the unit; implements and administers methods and procedures to enhance operations, as appropriate to the unit.
  7. Develops confidentiality recordkeeping procedures and manages appropriate department records in accordance with applicable regulations, policies, and standards.
  8. Assists in the annual budget planning process and regularly monitors expenditures.
  9. Assists in planning snow removal operations and makes personnel assignments for operating snow removal equipment.
  10. Makes appropriate modifications and/or adjustments to landscape in order to ensure compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) regulations.
  11. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED; at least 7 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified. Certification/Licensure State of New Mexico 3A Pesticide License in Ornamental and Turf Pest Control: Insecticides. State of New Mexico 3B Pesticide License in Ornamental and Turf Pest Control: Herbicides. Must obtain International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) Certification within one (1) year from date of hire.
  • Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Knowledge of greenhouse operations, propagation methods, chemical applications, insect/disease control, plant nutrition, and pruning methods.
  • Knowledge of tree fertilization and chemical treatment techniques.
  • Knowledge of tree pruning, deadwooding, cable-bracing, utility clearance, removal, and repair techniques.
  • Knowledge of laws, regulations, methods, and techniques in area of specialty.
  • Knowledge of tree-climbing, ropes and rigging techniques.
  • Knowledge of fertilizer and/or pesticide applications.
  • Knowledge of applicable safety procedures.
  • Skill in the use of computers, preferably in a PC, Windows-based operating environment.
  • Skill in organizing resources and establishing priorities.
  • Skill in examining and re-engineering operations and procedures, formulating policy, and developing and implementing new strategies and procedures.
  • Skill in operating snow removal equipment.

Distinguishing Characteristics

    Position requires: a) Maintaining comprehensive inventories and orders including the tree nursery; b) Supervising personnel including recommendation of hiring, performance evaluation, training, work allocation, and problem resolution; c) Responding to inquiries and investigating problems related to the department; d) Participating in the development of department goals and objectives, and e) Assists in annual budget planning process.

Conditions of Employment

  • Must pass a pre-employment criminal background check.
  • Successful candidate must submit to post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history check.
  • Must maintain certification and/or licensure status.
  • Possession of a valid New Mexico driver's license is a requirement for this job.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

  • Work involves considerable exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.
  • Extensive physical activity. Requires strenuous physical work; heavy lifting, pushing, or pulling required of objects over 50 pounds.
  • Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions.

The University of New Mexico provides all training required by OSHA to ensure employee safety.
