The following statements are intended to describe, in broad terms, the general functions and responsibility levels characteristic of positions assigned to this classification. Performs and/or oversees the maintenance of turf areas requiring both standard and non-standard care; performs and/or oversees pesticide application, and peforms and/or oversees turf equipment maintenance. Provides day-to-day leadership and oversight to other assigned employees in the performance of related duties.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Performs and/or oversees all aspects of the establishment, maintenance, and repair of standard and specialized turf areas, as appropriate to the individual position.
  2. Operates and/or oversees the operation of turf preparation, maintenance, and repair equipment.
  3. Assesses disease and insect problems in turf areas and performs pest and disease control operations.
  4. Supervises the work of employees in supporting roles, including assigning workload and monitoring employee performance.
  5. Ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies; promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices.
  6. Applies pesticides and fertilizers.
  7. Maintains records of work performed.
  8. Performs and/or oversees snow removal as required.
  9. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED; at least 3 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified. Certification/Licensure State of New Mexico Pesticide License in Ornamental and Turf Pest Control.
  • Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Skill in the use of computers, preferably in a PC, Windows-based operating environment.
  • Records maintenance skills.
  • Ability to assess and treat turf areas for insects and pests.
  • Knowledge of fertilizer and/or pesticide applications.
  • Ability to lead and train staff and/or students.
  • Ability to read, understand, follow, and enforce safety procedures.
  • Specialized and/or advanced knowledge of turf propagation, maintenance, and repair procedures and techniques.
  • Advanced or specialized knowledge of the operation of turf maintenance equipment.
  • Ability to foster a cooperative work environment.

Conditions of Employment

  • A valid New Mexico driver's license will be required if a motor vehicle must be operated on the job.
  • This position is represented by a labor union and is subject to the terms and conditions of the CWA Collective Bargaining Agreement.
  • Successful candidate must submit to post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history check.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

  • Work involves considerable exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.
  • Extensive physical activity. Requires strenuous physical work; heavy lifting, pushing, or pulling required of objects over 50 pounds.
  • Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions.

The University of New Mexico provides all training required by OSHA to ensure employee safety.
