The following statements are intended to describe, in broad terms, the general functions and responsibility levels characteristic of positions assigned to this classification. Under direct supervision in an inpatient/hospital setting, provides direct, non-invasive, and routine patient care and related support services within an in-patient or out-patient environment.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Checks in patients, assists in taking patient histories, takes vital signs as appropriate, and prepares patient charts.
  2. Assists with non-invasive, routine patient care procedures, such as ultrasound procedures, as specifically directed by professional staff.
  3. Maintains stocks of medicines and medical supplies as necessary.
  4. Interviews and reviews patients for financial status, as appropriate.
  5. May coordinate office activities and perform a range of accounting and administrative functions in support of unit activities; may oversee student employees in specified tasks.
  6. Practices appropriate safety, environmental, and infection control procedures.
  7. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED; no previous experience required.
  • Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Ability to maintain quality, safety, and/or infection control standards.
  • Knowledge of inventory management practices.
  • Ability to perform standard clinical procedures according to established protocols.
  • Ability to understand and follow complex, detailed technical instructions.
  • Interviewing skills.

Conditions of Employment

  • This position is represented by a labor union and is subject to the terms and conditions of the CWA Collective Bargaining Agreement.
  • Successful candidate must submit to post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history check.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

  • Moderate physical activity. Requires handling of average-weight objects up to 25 pounds or standing and/or walking for more than four (4) hours per day.
  • Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions.
  • Work may involve moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.

The University of New Mexico provides all training required by OSHA to ensure employee safety.
