Summary

Leads, directs, and administers the integrated research and academic operations and programs of the UNM Comprehensive Cancer Center (UNMCCC), ensuring quality and economical services, compliance with established objectives, and other related activities. Oversees personnel and significant resources for the center, and exercises strategic budget, administrative control over strategic planning and internal program management and external relationships.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Directs and coordinates all research and academic administrative functions the UNMCCC; provides administrative guidance and support to all components of the UNMCCC.
  2. Directs the overall daily operations of the research and academic facilities, and administration ensuring compliance with university, local, state, and federal regulations, accreditation and licensure requirements, and continuous quality improvement programs.
  3. Continually monitors the center's operations, programs, and physical properties; initiates required changes in conjunction with the UNMCCC leadership.
  4. Directly and administratively supervises professional and research staff including final approval of hiring decisions, performance appraisals, scheduling, training, employee development, and disciplinary actions; develops procedures and assigns work tasks to improve efficiency.
  5. Participates with senior UNMCCC leaders in long-range planning, policy development, and problem solving.
  6. Assures the sound fiscal operation of the center through development and implementation of comprehensive annual budgets.
  7. Develops plans and makes recommendations relative to organizational and departmental operations such as organizational structure, facilities, space and layout, equipment use, and expansion of facilities and services.
  8. Conducts feasibility studies, recommends and implements fee schedules, monitors revenue and expenditure trends, and makes recommendations for cost-effective operations.
  9. Oversees reimbursement activities, including billing and collection; manages financial and information systems.
  10. Represents the center at local, state, and national meetings, conferences, and conventions.
  11. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree; at least 7 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
  • Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Ability to use independent judgment and to manage and impart confidential information.
  • A comprehensive knowledge of UNIX operating system facilities and multiple high performance computing architectures.
  • Ability to effectively manage time and schedules.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
  • Knowledge of accreditation and certification requirements and compliance standards.
  • Skill in examining and re-engineering operations and procedures, formulating policy, and developing and implementing new strategies and procedures.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
  • Knowledge of organizational development theory and practices.
  • Ability to develop, plan, and implement short- and long-range goals.
  • Skill in budget preparation and fiscal management.
  • Knowledge of continuous quality improvement management principles and practices.
  • Knowledge of facilities and asset management methods and procedures.
  • Strategic planning skills.
  • Ability to develop and deliver presentations in local and national settings.
  • Knowledge of applicable legislation, standards, policies and procedures within specialty area.
  • Ability to establish, direct, and enforce administrative and financial control systems, policies, and procedures in a related operating environment.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

  • No or very limited physical effort required.
  • Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment.
  • Will work with blood or blood-borne pathogens and will require OSHA training.

The University of New Mexico provides all training required by OSHA to ensure employee safety.
