Leads other technicians in metal fabrication and/or welding work. Inspects facilities and plans metal system repairs.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Leads and/or guides the work of lower level sheetmetal or welding technicians in layout, fabrication, and installation of projects.
  2. Inspects facilities and surrounding support structures and plans metal system repairs.
  3. Prepares drawings and sketches for project fabrication.
  4. Estimates, lays out, and selects materials for sheetmetal and/or welding projects.
  5. Interprets blueprints for sheet metal fabrication and/or welding projects.
  6. Ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies; promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices.
  7. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED; at least 7 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified. Certification/Licensure State of New Mexico or Union Certification as Fully Qualified Structural and Pipe Welder or Sheetmetal Worker.
  • Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Ability to intepret blueprints and prepare field drawings of structural repairs or proposed modifications.
  • Knowledge of mechanics, shop mathematics, metal properties, layout, and machining procedures.
  • Ability to lead and train staff and/or students.
  • Ability to interpret building blueprints and recommend metal system and/or welding repair and/or modifications.
  • Knowledge of ordering job materials and accounting for job labor and material costs.
  • Ability to read, understand, follow, and enforce safety procedures.
  • Ability to perform inspections and make necessary adjustments to conform to job specifications.

Distinguishing Characteristics

    Position requires: a) Leading/guiding the work of other sheetmetal or welding technicians; b) accounting for job labor and material and labor costs; c) ensuring all shop and jobsite safety procedures are followed; and d) Journeyman's Sheetmetal or Pipe Welding License.

Conditions of Employment

  • Possession of a valid New Mexico driver's license is a requirement for this job.
  • This position is represented by a labor union and is subject to the terms and conditions of the CWA Collective Bargaining Agreement.
  • Successful candidate must submit to post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history check.
  • Must maintain certification status.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

  • Work involves almost constant exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, toxic chemicals, biohazardous materials, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, and/or loud noises.
  • Considerable physical activity. Requires heavy physical work; heavy lifting, pushing, or pulling required of objects up to 50 pounds. Physical work is a primary part (more than 70%) of job.
  • Work environment involves exposure to potentially dangerous materials and situations that require following extensive safety precautions and may include the use of protective equipment.

The University of New Mexico provides all training required by OSHA to ensure employee safety.
