Performs welding, brazing and cutting tasks. Inspects job sites and plans welding repairs.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Performs system repairs, such as pipe and sheet steel cutting and welding, applying proper techniques and materials.
  2. Inspects proposed job site; employs proper fire protection devices and observes safety rules.
  3. Measures dimensions of repairs and determines required material quantity.
  4. Selects materials for individual repair jobs.
  5. Interprets blueprints for welding projects.
  6. Ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies; promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices.
  7. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED; at least 5 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified. Certification/Licensure State of New Mexico Welder Certification in Pipe and Structural Steel Welding.
  • Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Knowledge of mechanics, shop mathematics, metal properties, layout, and machining procedures.
  • Ability to intepret blueprints and prepare field drawings of structural repairs or proposed modifications.
  • Ability to interpret building blueprints and recommend welding repair and/or modifications.
  • Knowledge of ordering job materials and accounting for job labor and material costs.
  • Ability to read, understand, follow, and enforce safety procedures.

Distinguishing Characteristics

    Position requires: a) Performing welding, brazing and cutting tasks; b) measuring and determing required material quantity; c) selecting proper materials for repair jobs; d) interpreting blueprints and recommending welding repair and/or modifications; and e) State of New Mexico Welder Certification in Pipe and Structural Steel Welding.

Conditions of Employment

  • Possession of a valid New Mexico driver's license is a requirement for this job.
  • This position is represented by a labor union and is subject to the terms and conditions of the CWA Collective Bargaining Agreement.
  • Successful candidate must submit to post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history check.
  • Must maintain certification status.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

  • Work involves almost constant exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, toxic chemicals, biohazardous materials, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, and/or loud noises.
  • Considerable physical activity. Requires heavy physical work; heavy lifting, pushing, or pulling required of objects up to 50 pounds. Physical work is a primary part (more than 70%) of job.
  • Work environment involves exposure to potentially dangerous materials and situations that require following extensive safety precautions and may include the use of protective equipment.

The University of New Mexico provides all training required by OSHA to ensure employee safety.
