Performs sheetmetal fabrication and repair tasks. Inspects job sites and plans sheetmetal repairs.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Performs sheetmetal system repairs, including duct work fabrication and the build-up of custom structures to support existing building systems.
  2. Inspects facilities and surrounding support structures and plans metal system repairs.
  3. Prepares drawings and sketches for project fabrication.
  4. Selects appropriate materials for sheetmetal projects.
  5. Interprets blueprints for sheetmetal fabrication and associated projects.
  6. Ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies; promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices.
  7. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED; at least 5 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified. Certification/Licensure Journeyman's Sheetmetal License.
  • Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Ability to intepret blueprints and prepare field drawings of structural repairs or proposed modifications.
  • Knowledge of mechanics, shop mathematics, metal properties, layout, and machining procedures.
  • Ability to interpret building blueprints and recommend metal system modifications.
  • Knowledge of ordering job materials and accounting for job labor and material costs.
  • Ability to read, understand, follow, and enforce safety procedures.
  • Ability to perform inspections and make necessary adjustments to conform to job specifications.

Distinguishing Characteristics

    Position requires: a) Performing sheetmetal systems repairs; b) inspecting facilities and surrounding support structures; c) preparing drawings and/or interpreting blueprints for associated projects; d) ability to troubleshoot and recommend adjustments and modifications to sheetmetal systems; and e) Journeyman's Sheetmetal License.

Conditions of Employment

  • Possession of a valid New Mexico driver's license is a requirement for this job.
  • This position is represented by a labor union and is subject to the terms and conditions of the CWA Collective Bargaining Agreement.
  • Successful candidate must submit to post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history check.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

  • Work involves almost constant exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, toxic chemicals, biohazardous materials, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, and/or loud noises.
  • Considerable physical activity. Requires heavy physical work; heavy lifting, pushing, or pulling required of objects up to 50 pounds. Physical work is a primary part (more than 70%) of job.
  • Work environment involves exposure to potentially dangerous materials and situations that require following extensive safety precautions and may include the use of protective equipment.

The University of New Mexico provides all training required by OSHA to ensure employee safety.
