Repairs or installs finish carpentry elements including custom cabinetry, moldings, trim, and window and door systems.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Constructs, repairs, and/or installs finish carpentry elements including moldings, laminates, trim, and window and door systems.
  2. Constructs and installs custom cabinetry.
  3. Installs, repairs, or maintains door openers/closers.
  4. Installs glass doors and metal framing.
  5. Performs restoration work on wood cabinets, flooring, and furniture.
  6. May perform other tasks to include repairs or installation of frame walls, sheetrock, insulation, flooring, and other carpentry work.
  7. Ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies; promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices.
  8. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED; at least 5 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
  • Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Carpentry, building repair, and/or finish plaster and concrete skills.
  • Cabinet-making level skills in joinery, laminates and historic restoration.
  • Ability to use hand and power tools applicable to trade.
  • Ability to install, repair, and/or maintain construction hardware.
  • Skill in wood surface preparation, staining, and/or sealing techniques.
  • Ability to read, understand, follow, and enforce safety procedures.

Conditions of Employment

  • Possession of a valid New Mexico driver's license is a requirement for this job.
  • This position is represented by a labor union and is subject to the terms and conditions of the CWA Collective Bargaining Agreement.
  • Successful candidate must submit to post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history check.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

  • Work involves considerable exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.
  • Considerable physical activity. Requires heavy physical work; heavy lifting, pushing, or pulling required of objects up to 50 pounds. Physical work is a primary part (more than 70%) of job.
  • Work environment involves exposure to potentially dangerous materials and situations that require following extensive safety precautions and may include the use of protective equipment.

The University of New Mexico provides all training required by OSHA to ensure employee safety.
