Summary

Directs and manages the strategic marketing and communications functions of The University of New Mexico Health System and Health Sciences (UNMHS&HS), including branding, reputation enhancement, marketing and communications strategic planning, social media strategies, media/public relations and critical events strategies. Integrates the Health Sciences and Health System?s marketing programs, communications, media/public relations, websites, and related initiatives and teams into a cohesive effort that conveys a consistent message in support of the wide-ranging missions, strategic goals, and objectives. Serves as the UNM Health Systems and Health Sciences senior strategic advisor and customer service leader with respect to communications, media and public relations, and marketing initiatives. Reporting directly to the EVP for Health Sciences and CEO of the UNM Health System (EVP&CEO), serves as a member of the Health System and Health Sciences core leadership team and works closely with the Deans, Vice Presidents, Chairs, Staff Leaders, and CEOs of the Health System and Health Sciences.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. On behalf of the UNM Health System and Health Sciences (UNMHS&HS), initiates and oversees the establishment of integrated strategies, plans, and programs designed to ensure that all institutional communication, marketing, branding, and media/public relations efforts are cohesive, consistent, and effective in supporting the mission and advancement goals of the University.
  2. Maintains a customer service culture and orientation for this unit by creating strong teamwork and developing and enhancing partnerships with internal and external stakeholders.
  3. Oversees the creation and execution of comprehensive marketing and communication programs, plans, and initiatives, ensuring consistency with the UNMHS&HS's mission, objectives, and strategic plan, including media relations, community relations, and executive communications.
  4. Collaborates closely with the UNM Chief University Marketing and Communication Officer to ensure that individual programs support the overall mission, goals, and objectives of the University, including a common website.
  5. Advises senior Health System and Health Sciences leaders in their efforts to prepare, translate, and communicate their activities and accomplishments to internal and external audiences including governmental entities while working with related UNM services such as Government Relations Office and University Communications and Marketing (UCAM) Office.
  6. Serves as the source of expertise for all Health System and Health Sciences marketing and communications initiatives and serves to align and coordinate these activities, incorporating new and best practice technologies as they emerge.
  7. Designs, establishes, and maintains an organizational structure and cohesive staffing teams to effectively accomplish the organization's goals and objectives; oversees recruitment, training, supervision, and evaluation of unit staff.
  8. Develops and manages annual budgets for the Health System and Health Sciences' Marketing and Communication Office and performs periodic cost and productivity analyses.
  9. Works with patient advocacy, health literacy and Patient Family Advisory Committee (PFAC) and other community-based advisory groups on all marketing and communication needs, including patient and family-focused content and storytelling materials.
  10. Acts as a liaison with city and community leaders where UNM Health System and Health Sciences has locations for all marketing and communication needs; this may include representing the UNMHS&HS on community boards, other non-profits, and in partnership and collaboration meetings.
  11. Works with UNMHS&HS Leadership to support marketing, communication, and branding efforts, including ensuring strategic alignment, effective collaboration, and coordination with distributed teams within UNMHS&HS, such as the Comprehensive Cancer Center, Project ECHO, and UNMH schools and colleges.
  12. Oversees and directs the Health System and Health Sciences web and social media strategies, in alignment with UNM web communications, including digital media, software, servers, and hardware.
  13. Develops and manages reputation enhancement strategies and plans to improve UNMHS&HS standing in relevant health system and health science rankings and publications.
  14. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree; at least 10 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
  • Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the missions, strategic goals and objectives, and culture of working in health care systems and academics (health, education, research, inclusive excellence, and community engagement), including having worked in health systems and health sciences within a university.
  • Demonstrated strong strategic planning, change management, and other management skills.
  • Demonstrated skill in examining and re-engineering operations and procedures, formulating policy, and developing and implementing new strategies and standard operating procedures.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of marketing and branding principles, concepts, and methodologies.
  • Ability to bring people together to work collaboratively towards a common goal within organizations and across organizations.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and ability to establish and implement cohesive communication, marketing, web presence, and media/public relations techniques, engagements, strategies and plans.
  • Outstanding interpersonal and community relations skills and the ability to communicate and work effectively within a diverse community, including from the perspective of a public university and health system.
  • Advanced verbal and written communication skills and the ability to present effectively to small and large groups.
  • Extensive experience in being data driven to enhance impact, improve quality, and in collecting data through doing surveys and focus groups, and in providing market analysis to inform marketing campaign strategies.

  • Employees in this job title are subject to the terms and conditions of an employment contract. Employment contracts are typically subject to review and renewal on an annual basis.
  • Employees who provide services or work in patient care or clinical areas are required to be in compliance with the University's influenza vaccination requirement, HIPAA and FERPA trainings.
