The following statements are intended to describe, in broad terms, the general functions and responsibility levels characteristic of positions assigned to this classification. Under indirect supervision, prepares, assembles, edits, formats, and writes unit publications, including articles, manuscripts, books, journals, magazines and/or website material. Ensures all materials meet established standards of appearance and content.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Edits, proofreads, and produces camera-ready copy for documents including newsletters, annual reports, booklets, flyers, course descriptions, books, manuscripts, articles, manuals, and other materials for distribution, or publication.
  2. Oversees production schedules to ensure completion by set deadlines.
  3. Provides technical computer support services and training to department personnel, as appropriate to the objectives of the position.
  4. Serves as a liaison between the unit and authors, printers, and/or publishers; as appropriate to the position, locates peer reviewers and mediates between peer reviewer and author.
  5. May maintain databases and files including those used to track subscriptions and mailing lists.
  6. May coordinate department activities such as production of documents, scheduling meetings, preparing agendas, and maintaining files.
  7. May negotiate contracts with authors and publishers for distributed books and reprints.
  8. May lead, guide, and train staff/student employees, interns, and/or volunteers performing related work; may participate in the recruitment of volunteers, as appropriate to the area of operation.
  9. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree; at least 3 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
  • Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Knowledge of planning and scheduling techniques.
  • Skill in the use of personal computers and related software applications.
  • Ability to evaluate and edit the content, structure, and format of a range of written material.
  • Ability to develop and prepare manuscript copy for printing and/or reproduction.
  • Ability to provide technical guidance and training to end users.
  • Mediation skills.
  • Knowledge of printing procedures and requirements.

Distinguishing Characteristics

    Position requires: a) Editing, proofreading and preparing material for publication including books, manuscripts, articles, and papers; b) overseeing production schedules; c) serving as liaison between the unit and authors, printers, and/or publishers; d) producing camera ready graphics and illustrations for publications; and e) leading/guiding staff performing related work.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

  • No or very limited physical effort required.
  • No or very limited exposure to physical risk.
  • Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment.
