The following statements are intended to describe, in broad terms, the general functions and responsibility levels characteristic of positions assigned to this classification. Under limited supervision, leads the installation, maintenance, operation, testing and repair of broadcast, satellite and/or television transmission systems, equipment and networks. Utilizes advanced knowledge to plan, lead and implement technical solutions to a wide variety of problems of a comprehensive and complex nature. Provides functional direction to support personnel and serves as a technical subject-matter expert on technical and operational issues. Maintains documentation in accordance with Federal Communications Commission (FCC) regulations and University policies and procedures.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Leads, coordinates and performs preventative maintenance and major repairs on broadcast, satellite and/or transmission systems, equipment and networks, including complex problem solving with diverse software applications and hardware systems.
  2. Provides advanced broadcast technological support, maintenance and testing for proper upkeep of systems; troubleshoots complex system hardware, software and network failures, conflicts, and disruptions.
  3. Leads and performs the installation, configuration and maintenance of computers, networks, workstations and/or other related equipment and devised used for broadcasting, remote transmitting, and/or editing broadcast content.
  4. Designs and implements computer documentation software; maintains, updates and audits recordkeeping systems in compliance with FCC regulations, station requirements, and UNM policies.
  5. Performs and/or coordinates activities concerned with the layout and design of electrical circuitry, to ensure conformance with appropriate codes and safety regulations.
  6. Leads the implementation of broadcast and transmission construction projects, to include development and upgrades; monitors and coordinates the work of outside contractors engaged in construction projects, as appropriate.
  7. Acts as a source of technical advice and consultation to internal and external individuals and agencies on associated technical and operational issues.
  8. Maintains current knowledge of state-of-the-art transmission technology, equipment, and procedures, to ensure the continued efficient and cost-effective operation of the station's broadcast transmission facilities.
  9. Provides technical oversight and assignment, supervision, and review of work performed by team members; may supervise and/or lead lower graded staff and/or student employees.
  10. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED; at least 5 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified. Certification/Licensure: Society of Broadcast Engineers (SBE) Certification obtained within 12 months of hire date.
  • Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Ability to work a flexible schedule on a regular basis.
  • Knowledge of a wide range of TV broadcast and transmission equipment including, but not limited to, broadcast computer systems software, applications, hardware, circuitry, networking, and communications.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Knowledge of current technological developments/trends in area of expertise.
  • Records maintenance skills.
  • Ability to write and prepare computer software, technical documentation, and procedures in area of specialty.
  • Knowledge of FCC and other federal, state and local broadcasting regulations.
  • Technical problem solving skills within area of specialty.
  • Ability to determine transmission, satellite, broadcast server and/or related computer problems in order to coordinate hardware, software, and/or network solutions.
  • Ability to provide technical support and functional direction to other technical staff and/or student employees.
  • Knowledge of broadcast signal distribution systems circuitry, design, and configuration.
  • Ability to perform advanced preventive maintenance on transmission and/or broadcast systems hardware, software & applications, networks, and communications systems.

Distinguishing Characteristics

    Position requires: a) provision of advanced technical support in the area of broadcast technologies; b) leadership and/or supervision of technical broadcast personnel, and; c) subject-matter expertise on technical and operational issues.

Conditions of Employment

  • Possession of a valid New Mexico driver's license is a requirement for this job.
  • Must obtain certification within one (1) year date of hire.
  • Successful candidate must submit to a post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history check.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

  • Work involves exposure to high altitudes, extreme temperatures, and other unusual elements related to outdoor environments; work requires frequent operation of 4-wheel drive vehicles and/or snow cats.
  • Moderate physical activity. Requires handling of average-weight objects up to 25 pounds or standing and/or walking for more than four (4) hours per day.
  • Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions.

The University of New Mexico provides all training required by OSHA to ensure employee safety.
