Under direct supervision, assists in the processing of retail sales and transactions. Sells merchandise, provides routine customer service on the sales floor, and assists in the stocking and restocking of shelves. Provides assistance as directed in non-technical areas such as bag checking, security, line monitoring, and merchandise sacking, and handles routine telephone inquiries as required.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Sells merchandise and/or rents equipment; advises customers on merchandise price, features, and/or on fees and services.
  2. Assists individual and/or institutional customers in the ordering and, as appropriate, delivery of merchandise.
  3. Provides assistance in receiving and display of merchandise and/or equipment, in accordance with specific instructions and established policies and procedures; ensures that displays are in accordance with established standards.
  4. Provides assistance as directed with bag checking, floor security, line monitoring, merchandise sacking, and/or related routine floor duties.
  5. Operates computerized cash register to conduct sales transactions; handles cash, and makes change as required.
  6. Answers telephones and handles routine customer telephone inquiries.
  7. Performs general floor maintenance and housekeeping; monitors and maintains the condition and safekeeping of merchandise and/or rental equipment.
  8. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED; no previous experience required.
  • Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Ability to secure and handle cash.
  • Ability to understand and follow specific instructions and procedures.
  • Knowledge of customer service standards and procedures.
  • Ability to safely use cleaning equipment and supplies.
  • Ability to prepare routine administrative paperwork.
  • Knowledge of basic cash management procedures.
  • Ability to take orders and impart information over the telephone.
  • Knowledge of retail floor sales techniques.
  • Ability to operate a computerized cash register.
  • Knowledge of shop security and safety procedures.

Conditions of Employment

  • This position is represented by a labor union and is subject to the terms and conditions of the CWA Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

  • Moderate physical activity. Requires handling of average-weight objects up to 25 pounds or standing and/or walking for more than four (4) hours per day.
  • No or very limited exposure to physical risk.
  • Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment.
