Summary

Under general supervision, manages and coordinates the production and direction of all on-air television programming created by KNME-TV, such as news/public affairs, and arts/cultural affairs. Manages, trains, and guides staff producers and technical support staff, contract producers, and independent production personnel. Creates and develops programs, and oversees the production and editorial process. Oversees program funding, budgets, and expenditures.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Oversees all facets of the daily operations of the organizational unit, ensuring compliance with the University, state, and federal laws, policies, and regulations.
  2. Manages, leads, guides, and coordinates the activities of contract producers and independent contract production personnel, volunteers, and students, as appropriate.
  3. Oversees the supervision of personnel, which includes work allocation, training, promotion, enforcement of internal procedures and controls, and problem resolution; evaluates performance and makes recommendations for personnel actions; motivates employees to achieve peak productivity and performance.
  4. Manages and coordinates the production process for in-house programs, to include progam creation and development, production, scheduling and promotion, editorial supervision, and scheduling of facilities, equipment, personnel, and locations.
  5. Identifies and interacts with funding organizations to secure production funding; develops and writes grant proposals.
  6. Develops and organizes funding for programs, as appropriate, and manages program budgets and expenditures.
  7. Develops or assists with the development and implementation of policies and procedures consistent with those of the organization to ensure efficient and safe operation of the unit.
  8. Represents the organization at various community and/or business meetings, committees, and task forces; promotes existing and new programs and/or policies.
  9. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree; at least 3 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
  • Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Ability to develop and maintain recordkeeping systems and procedures.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
  • Ability to develop and produce grants and other proposals.
  • Skill in budget preparation and fiscal management.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Skill in the use of personal computers and related software applications.
  • Skill in organizing resources and establishing priorities.
  • Skill in examining and re-engineering operations and procedures, formulating policy, and developing and implementing new strategies and procedures.
  • Ability to coordinate and/or supervise independent contractors.
  • Knowledge of FCC and other federal, state and local broadcasting regulations.
  • Ability to supervise and train employees, to include organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling work assignments.
  • Knowledge of federal, state and/or community funding sources and mechanisms.
  • Ability to foster a cooperative work environment.
  • Ability to create, write, direct, shoot, edit, produce, and promote television programs in area of specialty.
  • Employee development and performance management skills.
  • Knowledge of faculty and/or staff hiring procedures.

Conditions of Employment

  • Possession of a valid New Mexico driver's license is a requirement for this job.
  • Ability to secure and maintain a valid UNM Driver's License.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

  • No or very limited physical effort required.
  • No or very limited exposure to physical risk.
  • Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment.
