The following statements are intended to describe, in broad terms, the general functions and responsibility levels characteristic of positions assigned to this classification. Summary

Performs standard research protocol, under detailed and controlled research parameters, in a health sciences laboratory, clinical, and/or field research setting. Conducts a variety of standardized tests and procedures; prepares data, samples, and/or specimens, and sets up and operates standard laboratory, clinical, or field testing equipment of standard complexity. Verifies and records data, and performs preliminary manipulation of experiment and/or test results, providing basic data analyses, summaries, and interpretations.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Sets up, performs, and quality controls scientific experiments, tests, and/or field studies of standard complexity, as dictated by established protocol.
  2. Compiles, manipulates, and analyzes data and prepares preliminary reports on results of scientific experiments and tests for investigators, in accordance with established protocol and procedural guidelines.
  3. Selects, modifies, and/or adapts equipment or procedures to specific project requirements; may participate in the design of routine experiments and/or testing instruments and procedures.
  4. Performs routine laboratory equipment troubleshooting and repair.
  5. Monitors, stocks, and procures research equipment and supplies inventories, as appropriate.
  6. May lead, guide, and train staff/student employees, interns, and/or volunteers performing related work; may participate in the recruitment of volunteers, as appropriate to the area of operation.
  7. Practices safety, environmental, and/or infection control methods.
  8. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED; at least 3 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
  • Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Ability to maintain quality, safety, and/or infection control standards.
  • Ability to use scientific research software to analyze data and prepare statistical summaries and reports.
  • Basic knowledge and understanding of scientific research methodology.
  • Ability to collect and process research data and accurately record findings.
  • Knowledge of the use and maintenance of laboratory facilities and/or equipment.
  • Working knowledge of research techniques, instrumentation, and/or equipment, as specified in the research study.
  • Ability to develop creative solutions to routine research procedural problems.

Conditions of Employment

  • For individual positions in which driving is a job requirement, a valid NM driver's license and valid UNM driver's permit will be required.
  • Successful candidate must submit to post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history check.
  • Annual TB testing may be required if working in a patient care area.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

  • Work may, on occasion, involve exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.
  • Moderate physical activity. May require physical effort including lifting up to 25 pounds and some extended periods of standing or walking.
  • Work may on occasion involve exposure to potentially dangerous materials and situations that may require following extensive safety precautions and may include the use of protective equipment.

The University of New Mexico provides all training required by OSHA to ensure employee safety.
