Summary

Under general supervision, uses fundamental concepts, practices, and procedures of particular field of specialization to perform varied scientific research tasks of moderate complexity requiring application and adaptation of established techniques, procedures, and criteria.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Evaluates, selects, and applies standard scientific techniques, procedures, and criteria to accomplish a variety of research assignments.
  2. Performs research assignments involving a number of variables and applies or uses scientific procedures, laboratory equipment, and computer technology which may involve complex functions or features.
  3. Makes preliminary selections and adaptations of scientific alternatives requiring the exercise of judgment.
  4. Receives and carries out instructions on specific assignment objectives, complex features, and possible solutions.
  5. Collects, analyzes, and interprets data; prepares statistical and narrative reports and/or graphs.
  6. Serves as principal investigator, as appropriate, on sub-projects of complexities consistent with above criteria.
  7. Ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies; promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices.
  8. Maintains currency of knowledge with respect to relevant state-of-the-art technology, equipment, and/or systems.
  9. Designs, performs, and/or oversees experiments and data collection to ensure data integrity, quality control, and protocol compliance.
  10. May lead and guide staff and/or students engaged in associated research support activities.
  11. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree; at least 1 year of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
  • Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Knowledge of current technological developments/trends in area of expertise.
  • Ability to develop and follow research methodology and protocol.
  • Ability to gather and analyze statistical data and generate reports.
  • Skill in the use of personal computers and related software applications.
  • Ability to understand and follow specific instructions and procedures.
  • Knowledge of scientific approach and methodologies.
  • Knowledge of the use and maintenance of laboratory facilities and/or equipment.
  • Ability to read, understand, follow, and enforce safety procedures.
  • Ability to use independent judgment to adapt and modify research concepts and approaches to specific projects.
  • Ability to investigate and analyze information and draw conclusions.
  • Ability to design, organize, and coordinate scientific research projects.
  • Knowledge of research methodology, principles and procedures.

Distinguishing Characteristics

    Position requires: a) utilization of advanced methods, techniques, and procedures in the performance of scientific research involving multiple variables; b) independent design, organization, and quality control of moderately complex, but specific research projects within an integrated, multifaceted research program; c) oversight of standard sub-projects as principal researcher; d) direct participation in the development, writing, and presentation of abstracts, manuscripts, and posters as part of a research team.

Conditions of Employment

  • Successful candidate must submit to a post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history check. Additional health screenings may be required, dependent on the nature of the research conducted, as determined by Employee Occupational Health Services.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

  • No or very limited physical effort required.
  • Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions.
  • Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment.

The University of New Mexico provides all training required by OSHA to ensure employee safety.
