The following statements are intended to describe, in broad terms, the general functions and responsibility levels characteristic of positions assigned to this classification. Under direct supervision, performs defined routine technical/clerical procedures and/or customer information services within a library specialist unit, such as circulation, bindery operations, bibliographic services, technical services, or cataloging.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Responds to individual requests for information from library clients; refers clients to appropriate information source, and/or answers routine operational and procedural questions.
  2. Provides technical assistance to specialist staff in the processing and/or maintenance of library documents and materials.
  3. Uses automated on-line library systems to perform basic library activities or processes; verifies and enters data or statistics.
  4. Provides periodical statistical data and assists with report preparation for the unit, as appropriate.
  5. Maintains inventories of equipment and supplies for the unit; assists the unit in the processing of administrative and financial transactions.
  6. Covers for the circulation desk on an as-needs basis.
  7. May assign duties to and monitor the activities of students performing routine library duties and services.
  8. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED; at least 6 months of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
  • Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Ability to interpret and refer informational requests.
  • Knowledge of procedures and standards for the processing and/or maintenance of library materials.
  • Ability to understand and follow specific instructions and procedures.
  • Knowledge of customer service standards and procedures.
  • Ability to process computer data and to format and generate reports.
  • Knowledge of basic office practices, procedures, and equipment.
  • Word processing and/or data entry skills.
  • Ability to complete moderately complex administrative paperwork.
  • Knowledge of library principles, practices, and terminology.

Distinguishing Characteristics

    Position requires: a) Customer service and interaction with library clients; b) use of automated library systems to enter and/or verify data; c) use of computerized software to provide data and reports; and d) routine fiscal or administrative support in financial and/or inventory areas.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

  • Considerable physical activity. Requires heavy physical work; heavy lifting, pushing, or pulling required of objects up to 50 pounds. Physical work is a primary part (more than 70%) of job.
  • No or very limited exposure to physical risk.
  • Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment.
