The following statements are intended to describe, in broad terms, the general functions and responsibility levels characteristic of positions assigned to this classification. They should not be viewed as an exhaustive list of the specific duties and prerequisites applicable to individual positions that have been so classified.


Plans and implements activities which are designed to develop a range of social, cognitive, and/or motor skills for individual and/or groups of children within a specified age range, working within a child care center, classroom, or field environment. Supervises and trains student employees and/or staff engaged in child care and development activities.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Prepares and implements learning and skills development plans for targetted population, on a weekly and/or monthly basis.
  2. Designs and implements developmentally appropriate individual and/or group activities and learning opportunities according to individual needs and learning styles.
  3. Provides individual and/or group direction, guidance and supervision of children in the performance of developmental activities.
  4. Prepares instructional, developmental, and recreational materials, facilities, and equipment in accordance with applicable regulations, policies, and standards; instructs, guides and/or supervises children in the proper and safe use of facilities and equipment.
  5. Instructs and monitors children in the development of proper health care and hygiene skills; as appropriate to position, performs nutrition and hygiene procedures as necessary for children too young or otherwise unable to provide for themselves.
  6. As appropriate to position, prepares and supervises meals and snacks for children participating in programs.
  7. Interacts with parents and community groups; maintains open and cooperative communication with parents and families, encouraging their involvement in the program and supporting the child's family relationships.
  8. Performs routine cleaning, sanitizing, and maintenance of center facilities and equipment.
  9. May lead, guide, and train staff/student employees, interns, and/or volunteers performing related work; may participate in the recruitment of volunteers, as appropriate to the area of operation.
  10. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED; at least 1 year of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
  • Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Knowledge of accreditation and certification requirements and standards.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
  • Knowledge of child cognitive, social, and skills development methods and techniques.
  • Ability to plan, develop, and implement development activities and programs for children.
  • Ability to safely use cleaning equipment and supplies.
  • Knowledge of child development theory and practice.
  • Child supervision skills.
  • Ability to lead, instruct, and successfully interact with children of various ages under 10 years.
  • Ability to read, understand, follow, and enforce safety procedures.
  • Ability to instruct and successfully interact with very young children and/or adolescents.
  • Knowledge of the application, safe usage, and maintenance requirements of relevant facilities and equipment.
  • Ability to provide a supportive and caring environment for children.
  • Ability to manage and provide for the health, nutrition, and hygiene requirements of infants, young children, and/or adolescents.
  • Knowledge of basic food preparation techniques and standards.
  • Ability to persuade and influence others.

Distinguishing Characteristics

    Position requires: A) planning and organizing cognitive, social, and motor skills development activities for children according to pre-established protocol; B) guidance and supervision of children in the performance of developmental activities; C) preparation and delivery of developmental and instructional materials; D) interaction with parents and community agencies; E) use of established health care, sanitation, and hygiene methods and techniques.

Conditions of Employment

  • Specialty licensure/certification may be required, as specified by the department.
  • All regular, non-temporary positions assigned to this classification are represented by a labor union and subject to the terms and conditions of the US-UNM Collective Bargaining Agreement.
  • Successful candidate must submit to post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history check.
  • Successful candidate must pass a comprehensive post-offer, pre-employment criminal and CYFD fingerprinting background check.
  • Employees who provide services or work in patient care or clinical areas are required to be in compliance with the University's influenza vaccination requirement.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

  • Light physical effort. Requires handling of average-weight objects up to 10 pounds or some standing or walking. Effort applies to no more than two (2) hours per day.
  • Work environment involves minimal exposure to physical risks, such as operating dangerous equipment or working with chemicals.
  • Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment.

The University of New Mexico provides all training required by OSHA to ensure employee safety.
