The following statements are intended to describe, in broad terms, the general functions and responsibility levels characteristic of positions assigned to this classification. Under training and close supervision in a clinical educational setting, consistently and accurately portrays specific emotions, behaviors, and physical disease symptoms while interacting with students in the health care field during simulated patient encounters designed to enable student experiential learning and/or assessment of student skills. Works varied hours on an on-call basis, as needed.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Memorizes a case script detailing specific emotions, behaviors, and disease signs/symptoms for presentation during simulated learning situations.
  2. Presents case information in a standardized manner, as elicited by students during simulated interactive patient history and/or medical examinations.
  3. Remains in a specific patient character as trained when responding to student questions.
  4. Accurately remembers encounters with students for the purpose of scoring student behaviors.
  5. Maintains confidentiality of information related to cases, student behaviors and feedback evaluations.
  6. Provides educationally constructive verbal feedback within a structured format, as appropriate to the position.
  7. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Less than high school; no previous experience required.
  • Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Ability to accurately and convincingly maintain a specified character as trained.
  • Ability to work flexible hours on a scheduled on-call basis.
  • Ability to recall case information, as cued by students in a role-play situation.
  • Ability to recall and accurately score student behaviors.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of case and student information.
  • Ability to understand and follow directions and incorporate trainer feedback.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

Conditions of Employment

  • The posting for an actual position opening may require specific physical attributes and/or characteristics designed to meet the role of the character being portrayed.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

  • Must be able to: move all extremities without difficulty, step up and down from an exam table, and quickly change from a gown to clothing.
  • Work is performed in an interior medical/clinical environment.
  • No or very limited physical effort required.
  • No or very limited exposure to physical risk.
