Summary

Prepares detailed conceptual and working drawings, specifications, and programming documents for comprehensive construction and renovation projects. Leads and coordinates the activities of lower graded drafters and/or other support staff, as appropriate.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Prepares complete and detailed drawings for comprehensive renovation and new construction projects involving structural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and other systems using advanced computer-aided drafting techniques.
  2. Prepares architectural programming documents, specifications, and detailed cost estimates for comprehensive construction projects.
  3. Performs detailed inspections of existing facilities for compliance with building codes and city, state, and federal regulations; may recommend and design alterations for Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), asbestos abatement, and other regulatory compliance.
  4. Prepares and/or assists in preparing correspondence to clients and contractors, cost estimates, bid documents, and purchase requisitions for project completion.
  5. May process requests and distribute construction bid documents and receive, hold, and redistribute document deposits.
  6. May provide graphics services for architectural models, campus map updates, forms, signs, and other miscellaneous projects.
  7. Maintains currency of knowledge with respect to relevant state-of-the-art technology, equipment, and/or systems.
  8. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED; at least 3 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
  • Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Knowledge of current technological developments/trends in area of expertise.
  • Ability to prepare engineering documents, specifications and cost estimates for projects.
  • Ability to prepare floor, site, and other architectural plans using CAD drafting techniques.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Knowledge of building codes, ADA, OSAA and other related construction regulations.

Distinguishing Characteristics

    Position requires: a) Preparing drawings for comprehensive renovation and new construction projects; b) inspecting of facilities for compliance with building codes and city/state/federal regulations; c) knowledge of building codes and other related construction regulations; d) preparing correspondence, cost estimates, and bid documents to clients and contractors; and e) leading and coordinating the activities of architectural support staff.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

  • No or very limited physical effort required.
  • No or very limited exposure to physical risk.
  • Work may involve moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.
