Summary

Assists in the daily activities of a mechanical repair, design and/or fabrication shop. Monitors the work of student employees, provides technical support for teaching lab facilities, and ensures safety procedures are adhered to.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Provides facilities and technical support for the department's teaching laboratory activities; may provide technical advice and guidance to students on equipment usage, maintenance and safety, as appropriate.
  2. Assists in coordination of day-to-day activities of the shop, ensuring that production meets established objectives, and that all applicable operating policies and procedures are followed.
  3. Monitors the work of student employees and students engaged in shop production and production activities, to include recommendations for work allocation, and problem resolution.
  4. Monitors the functioning and maintenance of shop operating systems, equipment, and facilities.
  5. Selects, installs, and calibrates shop tools and equipment, and ensures that all equipment remains operational to specifications.
  6. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED; at least 1 year of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
  • Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Knowledge of operating and maintenance principles, procedures, and tolerances in area of technical expertise.
  • Knowledge of safety procedures applicable to shop activities.
  • Ability to install and calibrate specified machinery and/or technical equipment.
  • Ability to communicate technical information to non-technical personnel.

Conditions of Employment

  • All regular, non-temporary positions assigned to this classification are represented by a labor union and subject to the terms and conditions of the CWA Collective Bargaining Agreement.
  • Successful candidate must submit to post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history check.
  • Employees who provide services or work in patient care or clinical areas are required to be in compliance with the University's influenza vaccination requirement.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

  • Work involves considerable exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.
  • Considerable physical activity. Requires heavy physical work; heavy lifting, pushing, or pulling required of objects up to 50 pounds. Physical work is a primary part (more than 70%) of job.
  • Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions.

The University of New Mexico provides all training required by OSHA to ensure employee safety.
