Summary

Responsible for the fiscal direction of the University of New Mexico's Health Sciences Center - Office of Research. Provides strategic fiscal direction and leadership. Directs, plans, coordinates, and guides financial decisions and activities of all researchers and partners operating under the umbrella of the Office of Research. This is a single-incumbent position and requires authority over multiple schools/colleges/divisions across the University.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Provides leadership and vision to a diverse team of staff involved in the review, approval, and administration of funds designated to support researchers through the Office of Research.
  2. Oversees all aspects of financial operations, including state- and federally-sponsored funds, grants, appropriations, and cross-institutional funding structures.
  3. Reviews and interprets financial and operating information, as appropriate; coordinates and develops periodic financial and/or operating analyses, and prepares financial/business reports for senior university officials; may participate in the preparation of contract and/or grant proposals, and other reports provided by the unit.
  4. Prepares high-level financial analyses for various projects requested by executive and senior leadership; directly participates in the development of specialized financial reports for the Board of Regents, the State, and/or other governmental and executive entities.
  5. Manages and supervises personnel to including hiring and performance management; provides guidance and training to personnel.
  6. Collaborates with executive leadership, faculty, and staff on the development and submission of research priorities. Manages incoming funds related to the same.
  7. Provides broad, strategic fiscal guidance to faculty, research staff, and administrators on account establishment, accuracy of financial records, and project close-out.
  8. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree; at least 8 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
  • Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

  • Demonstrated leadership, organizational, and management skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and oral and written communication skills.
  • Advanced knowledge of public sector financial, accounting, and budgeting principles and procedures.
  • Skill in organizing resources and establishing priorities.
  • Skill in examining and re-engineering operations and procedures, formulating policy, and developing and implementing new strategies and procedures.
  • Ability to plan, coordinate, and administer complex administrative systems and processes.
  • Ability to make administrative and procedural decisions and judgments on sensitive, confidential issues.
  • Strong analytical, critical thinking, project management and decision making skills
  • Ability to resolve complex problems and issues.

  • Employees who provide services or work in patient care or clinical areas are required to be in compliance with the University's influenza vaccination requirement.
