The following statements are intended to describe, in broad terms, the general functions and responsibility levels characteristic of positions assigned to this classification. Under direct supervision, provides prospect identification, research, and analysis of financial and biographical information in support of development staff and administration in determining cultivation and solicitation strategies for major gifts and development of ongoing relationships with prospects and donors.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Uses a wide range of thorough and accurate research on prospects and donors which includes covering financial, biographical, philanthropic, career, family, and all other relevant information.
  2. Analyzes data and creates original, concise, readable, and timely documents in support of fundraisers, including but not limited to profiles, briefings, and customized summaries.
  3. Formats and generates reports, including summary, statistical, and/or presentation.
  4. Designs and runs queries to extract and compile data for reports.
  5. Calculates accurate capacity ratings on prospects, using all available financial resources and industry standard methods and ranges.
  6. Assists in assuring accuracy and integrity of donor and prospect information in the Advance database, based on research findings, capacity ratings, donor assignments, and other information that would require changes, additions, or updates.
  7. Verifies input data to ensure accuracy of completed work; scans and edits for errors during processing.
  8. Keeps updated with changing landscape of prospect research, including viewing webinars, attending seminars, reading articles, reviewing PRSPCT-L daily, testing new research resources, and taking advantage of all other opportunities to develop state-of-the-art fundraising and prospect research knowledge.
  9. Creates and monitors news alerts on key prospects, donors, and UNM alumni; enters articles into Advance; forwards to appropriate development officers and staff.
  10. Follows up on approved clearance and solicitation requests, documenting changes and creating assignments and proposals as needed in Advance database.
  11. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED; at least 5 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
  • Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Ability to provide excellent customer service.
  • Familiarity with full range of currently-available prospect research resources, including subscription databases and free websites, as well as non-electronic sources.
  • Understanding of and ability to interpret financial documents, including SEC filings, annual reports, compensation policies and stock awards and option documentation.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Flexibility to shift priorities quickly if needed, to respond to urgent or unusual requests, and to smoothly make changes in processes and procedures if requested.
  • Understanding of the highly confidential nature of prospect research, and adherence to the ethics policy of the Association of Professional Researchers for Advancement (APRA).
  • Familiarity with and ongoing progress toward full proficiency in all skills identified in the APRA Advanced Prospect Research Skills Set.
  • Ability to design and run computer systems queries.
  • Ability to format and generate summary, statistical, and presentation reports.

Conditions of Employment

  • If this position is assigned to the Athletics Department, either administratively or functionally, compliance with all NCAA rules and regulations is required.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

  • No or very limited physical effort required.
  • No or very limited exposure to physical risk.
  • Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment.

The University of New Mexico provides all training required by OSHA to ensure employee safety.
