As a single incumbent position reporting to the Dean of the School of Medicine (SOM), coordinates and advances the work of the Dean and SOM leadership. Serves as a trusted advisor, key communicator, and strategic partner for the Dean of UNM's largest and most complex school, and collaborates with key stakeholders, department administrators, and leadership in developing strategies, systems, and special projects to improve the quality, efficiency, and responsiveness of a broad range of services and operations. Advises the Dean in all aspects related to clinical, educational, scholarly activities, and community outreach.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Identifies and participates in the evaluation of strategic opportunities pertinent to the objectives of the SOM.
  2. Maintains high-priority projects designed to achieve the School's mission and strategic vision across all areas of education, research, service, and clinical services; builds and maintains successful working relationships and coordinates with a wide range of offices, staff, and key stakeholders, internal and external to the University.
  3. Gathers information, investigates, analyzes, summarizes, and provides recommendations to the Dean on key initiatives.
  4. Supports the Dean's research and scholarly work, including administration of laboratory goals, projects, funding priorities, and best practices.
  5. Ensures strategic alignment with the SOM, university, and statewide initiatives.
  6. Participates in and oversees the development, implementation, and maintenance of project objectives and short- and long-range plans; develops tracking and evaluation tools to assist in the accomplishment of established project goals and objectives.
  7. Oversees and coordinates the implementation and administration of integrated program development strategies, policies, and procedures for the SOM.
  8. Composes confidential reports and prepares executive summaries and correspondence for the Dean.
  9. Supports the Dean in addressing faculty, staff, student, and external constituent inquiries as requested.
  10. Sets goals, establishes priorities, manages resources, develops concepts and approaches, and reviews project progress and results for strategic initiatives.
  11. Gathers multiple inputs and integrates diverse plans and requests based on the Dean's priorities.
  12. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree; at least 7 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
  • Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
  • Skill in examining and re-engineering operations and procedures, formulating policy, and developing and implementing new strategies and procedures.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the principles, processes, and requirements for strategic planning and development within a public institution.
  • Ability to identify, evaluate, and accurately assess the viability of strategic opportunities available to the SOM.
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully direct, coordinate, and strategically integrate multiple developmental, enhancement, and/or modification projects at an institutional level.
  • Ability to gather data, investigate and analyze information while being able to draw conclusions and issue recommendations.
  • Ability to create, compose and edit correspondence, written materials, and complex reports.
  • Ability to perform complex tasks and to prioritize multiple projects.

  • Employees who provide services or work in patient care or clinical areas are required to be in compliance with the University's influenza vaccination requirement.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort
