Summary
Independently installs, maintains, calibrates, troubleshoots, and repairs the various instrumentation and controls used in the production, maintenance, and administration of the University's utility services and related plant, systems, and equipment. Monitors and maintains the University's Energy Management and Control System (EMCS). Collaborates with other technicians within the facility to ensure the continuity and reliability of utility services campus-wide. Coordinates and supervises lower level Instrumentation and Control Technicians in the absence of the supervisor or as otherwise assigned.
Duties and Responsibilities
Installs, maintains, troubleshoots, and repairs electronic, electro-pneumatic, and electro-mechanical controls and indicating systems used for the safe production of steam, electrical power, potable water, chilled water, and other related utilities.
Provides job task instruction, monitoring, supervision, and technical support to lower level I&C Technicians as needed or assigned.
Coordinates with other plant technicians to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient operation of utility plant tools, equipment, and machinery.
Reads, interprets, utilizes, and maintains schematics, blueprints, users manuals, and other equipment documentation, using computers and hard copy.
Develops calibration and routine maintenance schedules and procedures.
Plans, coordinates, and assists in the training of technicians, other staff/student employees, interns, and/or volunteers performing related work.
Interfaces with contractors and vendors regarding job-related projects, to ensure compliance with Utility Plant needs and goals.
Follows established Federal, State, and University safety and environmental policies and procedures, and promotes adherence to these policies and procedures in the workplace.
Assists in the operation and maintenance of the computerized building automation system (BAS), programmable logic control (PLC) based operating systems, and interface software.
Remains available 24 hours/day while on standby roster, rotating on a scheduled basis with other senior technicians.
Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
Minimum Job Requirements
High school diploma or GED; at least 5 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified OR directly related technical training received from an accredited source may be substituted for up to 2 years of experience.
Certification/Licensure: Current NM CID ES3J License.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required
Ability to calibrate, test, and maintain a variety of electrical and electronic devices.
Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
Skill in the use of personal computers and related software applications.
Ability to work effectively in confined spaces.
Ability to remain available on 24 hr standby on a rotating roster basis.
Ability to work in elevated locations up to 75 feet.
Ability to read and interpret electrical, electronic, and mechanical schematics, blueprints, and drawings.
Ability to perform preventive maintenance according to published guidelines.
Ability to read, understand, follow, and enforce safety procedures.
Knowledge of equipment and inventory management principles.
Knowledge of calibration standards and instrument installation requirements
Technical leadership and supervisory skills within area of expertise.
Working knowlege of computer-based maintenance and energy management systems.
Ability to develop and implement standard operating procedures.
Proficiency in the use of Highway Addressable Remote Transducer (HART) Protocol-based process transmitters and communication and calibration equipment.
Ability to supervise and train assigned staff including organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling work assignments.
Ability to use PLC-based operating systems and interface software.
Ability to work on 24/hour standby basis, and return to work after hours or on weekends as required.
Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively at all levels in a collaborative team environment.
Conditions of Employment
Possession of a valid New Mexico driver's license is a requirement for this job.
Must pass a pre-employment criminal background check.
Must obtain UNM Driver Safety Certification if operating a University Vehicle.
Successful candidate must submit to post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history check.
Must have Basic First Aid and Adult CPR/AED Certificates or obtain within 3 months of date of hire.
Working Conditions and Physical Effort
Moderate physical activity. Requires handling of average-weight objects up to 25 pounds or standing and/or walking for more than four (4) hours per day.
Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions.
Work may involve moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.
