Summary

Under direct supervision and guidance from certified technicians, installs, maintains, and calibrates plant instrumentation and control devices. Assists with a variety of duties including repair, calibration testing, and maintenance of pneumatic, electric, and electronic equipment, instruments, and components. Assists with corrective and preventive maintenance tasks related to the utilities plants and distribution.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Assists higher level technicians with maintaining, calibrating, and repairing plant instruments, control devices, and building metering devices.
  2. Supports higher level technicians in performing maintenance and repairs on plant and metering instrumentation and control devices.
  3. Assists with performing troubleshooting, calibration, and repair of industrial control systems and metering devices for the Utilities unit; obtains and records monthly meter readings.
  4. Assists in maintaining records of maintenance, calibration, and repair activities, to include maintaining currency of as-built drawings.
  5. Delivers parts and materials to technicians; maintains inventories of required stock and keeps current records of stock inventories.
  6. Supports the upgrade of existing electronic controls, instrumentation, and metering systems.
  7. Follows established Federal, State, and University safety and environmental policies and procedures, and promotes adherence to these policies and procedures in the workplace.
  8. Uses a computerized maintenance management system to track assigned work.
  9. Supports and assists more senior technicians in the performance of their duties.
  10. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED; at least 6 months of experience that is directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
  • Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Knowledge of supplies, equipment, and/or services ordering and inventory control.
  • Ability to learn to calibrate, test, and maintain a variety of electrical and electronic devices.
  • Ability to maintain current and accurate records of work performed.
  • Ability to work in elevated locations up to 50 feet.
  • Ability to monitor/interpret computer displays, digital metering, calibration equipment, and electronic and industrial control devices.
  • Ability to read and interpret schematics, drawings, and blueprints.
  • Ability to read, understand, follow, and enforce safety procedures.
  • Ability to operate digital keyboards, digital metering devices, calibration equipment, oscilloscopes, soldering equipment, and small hand tools.

Conditions of Employment

  • Possession of a valid New Mexico driver's license is a requirement for this job.
  • Must have Basic First Aid and Adult CPR/AED Certificates or obtain within 3 months of date of hire.
  • Must obtain NM CID Electrical Specialty (ES3J) Journeyman's license within 30 months of date of hire.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

  • Moderate physical activity. Requires handling of average-weight objects up to 25 pounds or standing and/or walking for more than four (4) hours per day.
  • Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions.
  • Work may involve moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.

The University of New Mexico provides all training required by OSHA to ensure employee safety.
