Summary
Under direct supervision, provides routine assistance in the performance of laboratory tests and/or research. Cleans, breaks down, and stores laboratory facilities, equipment, and supplies as appropriate, and may keep routine records and reports on laboratory results according to established procedures.
Duties and Responsibilities
Transports laboratory materials and/or specimens to and from other laboratories, as required.
Prepares standard equipment, facilities, and/or solutions for laboratory experiments, in accordance with detailed procedures and instructions.
Cleans, breaks down, and stores laboratory equipment, facilities, and supplies after completion of laboratory exercises, as required.
Practices safety, environmental, and/or infection control methods.
Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
Minimum Job Requirements
Successful completion of junior or senior year of high school; no previous experience required.
Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required
Ability to maintain quality, safety, and/or infection control standards.
Knowledge of specified laboratory solutions, materials and/or media.
Ability to understand and follow specific instructions and procedures.
Knowledge of related accreditation and certification requirements.
Knowledge of cleaning procedures and specifications of specified laboratory equipment and/or facilities.
Distinguishing Characteristics
Position requires: a) safe and proper handling of laboratory materials and specimens: b) following detailed procedures and instructions in the preparation and breakdown of laboratory equipment, facilities, and solutions; c) using prescribed sterile procedures in the cleaning of lab equipment, facilities, and supplies.
Conditions of Employment
Successful candidate must submit to post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history check.
Must be at least 18 years of age at date of hire.
Employees who provide services or work in patient care or clinical areas are required to be in compliance with the University's influenza vaccination requirement.
Working Conditions and Physical Effort
Considerable physical activity. Requires heavy physical work; heavy lifting, pushing, or pulling required of objects up to 50 pounds. Physical work is a primary part (more than 70%) of job.
Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions.
Work may involve moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.
The University of New Mexico provides all training required by OSHA to ensure employee safety.
