Summary
Manages and coordinates the integrated operational and programmatic activities of the UNM intercollegiate Division I Major Sports program, which consist of Football, Men's Basketball and Women's Basketball. Provides professional leadership, consultation, and expertise to coaches and related personnel engaged in program activities and initiatives. Develops and implements related operating policies and procedures, and provides strategic planning, budgeting, and operational assessment for the program. The Major Sports program is a key revenue source and is of strategic value and importance to the University at local, regional, and national levels.
Duties and Responsibilities
Provides strategic advice and consultation to the Head Coach in the areas of student athlete academic success and athletic and social welfare development.
Provides consultation and guidance to the Head Coach and coaching staff with respect to the overall evaluation of prospective student athletes.
Provides strategic leadership, administrative management, and day-to-day operational coordination to critical components of the program, to include NCAA compliance, student athlete academic monitoring and progress assessment, and community outreach activities.
Serves as primary point of contact and liaison with local, state, and national agencies and organizations such as the New Mexico Athletic Association (NMAA), the NCAA, and other professional coaching associations.
Identifies, recommends, and participates in synergistic, professional growth and development opportunities with respect to other coaching staff members, in support of the achievement of overall program goals and objectives.
Plans, develops, and manages annual budgeting, fiscal control, purchasing card expenses and reconciliation, and administrative policies and procedures related to team travel, technical equipment, and operating supplies for the program.
Manages all team travel including transportation, meals, lodging, practice location and scheduling.
Establishes and implements short- and long-range operational goals, objectives, policies, and procedures; monitors and evaluates operational effectiveness and effects changes required for improvement.
Provides additional services as assigned, such as motivational speaking, organization and implementation of youth programs, coordination of specified outreach initiatives, and donor relations and cultivation for the Lobo Club.
Represents the program to various institutional constituencies as well as externally to the media, governmental agencies, prospective funding sources, prospective vendors, and/or a range of other constituencies within the community at large.
Serves as Campus Security Authority as outlined by the Clery Act.
Assists department personnel in determining travel needs; notifies department personnel and/or team members of travel dates and times providing written itineraries when needed.
Minimum Job Requirements
Bachelor's degree; at least 3 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required
Knowledge and understanding of the unique strategic, programmatic, and operational requirements of a Division I program.
Knowledge and understanding of the current and emerging psychosocial issues facing college-level student athletes.
Knowledge of NCAA academic and behavioral rules, regulations, guidelines, and standards for student-athletes
Knowledge of NCAA recruiting and compliance rules as well as student-athlete eligibility requirements.
Strategic planning and advanced leadership skills.
Skill in examining and evaluating operations and developing and/or re-engineering operating strategies, systems, and procedures.
Knowledge of budgeting and fiscal management principles and procedures.
Advanced analytical, evaluative, and objective critical thinking skills.
Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
Highly developed verbal and written communication skills and the ability to present effectively to small and large groups.
Ability to travel and work flexible hours.

Employees in this job title are subject to the terms and conditions of an employment contract. Employment contracts are typically subject to review and renewal on an annual basis.
