Summary

Administers NCAA and Mountain West Conference compliance for UNM's twenty-one Division 1A intercollegiate athletic programs. Monitors adherence to NCAA and MWC rules, regulations, and eligibility requirements with respect to student athletes, prepares compliance and other related documentation, and coordinates action related to violations. Serves as primary resource for coaches and staff on sports compliance issues.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Determines student athletes eligibility for financial aid, playing and practice seasons, and continuing eligibility.
  2. Prepares and maintains squad lists for all 21 sports; updates any change in status of student athletes.
  3. Provides NCAA interpretation to all coaches and athletic advisors; utilizes NCAA legislative service database; serves as contact between NCAA and conference office.
  4. Provides and coordinates education and training for coaches, administrators, and staff on NCAA and MWC regulations and related compliance issues.
  5. Updates compliance manual; updates annually with all new NCAA or MWC rules and regulations.
  6. Maintains and administers NCAA Compliance Assistance software for student athlete financial aid, eligibility and recruiting.
  7. Monitors all coaches recruiting materials such as phone logs, playing and practice season, weekly athletic related activities, contact and evaluations with prospective student athleters, permissible recruiters, official visits, employment, etc.
  8. Provides clearance for official visits, physicals and term employment for student athletes.
  9. Administers the Mountain West Conference special assistance fund.
  10. Assists in the investigation and processing of all violations to the Conference Office or to the NCAA.
  11. Serves as Campus Security Authority as outlined by the Clery Act.
  12. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree; at least 1 year of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
  • Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
  • Knowledge of NCAA student-athlete academic eligibility requirements.
  • Skill in the use of personal computers and related software applications.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Knowledge of NCAA recruiting rules.
  • Knowledge of NCAA regulations and guidelines governing the recruitment and retention of student-athletes.
  • Knowledge of NCAA academic and behavioral rules, regulations, guidelines, and standards for student-athletes
  • Knowledge of NCAA team sport operations rules and regulations.
  • Computer skills, to include word processing and database management.
  • Skill in budget preparation and management.
  • Ability to develop and maintain recordkeeping systems and procedures.
  • Knowledge of financial aid policies, procedures, and eligibility requirements.

Conditions of Employment

  • Compliance with all NCAA rules and regulations is required in this position.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

  • No or very limited physical effort required.
  • No or very limited exposure to physical risk.
  • Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment.
