Summary

Supervises and coordinates all day-to-day activities of a complete shift of bus drivers assigned to operate multiple bus routes during and/or after normal university business hours. Coordinates transportation support for special events held in university facilities and venues, as appropriate. Performs bus driver duties as and when required.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Supervises a complete shift of bus drivers, to include scheduling and work allocation, problem and conflict resolution, overseeing, guiding, and evaluating the work of drivers; ensures that all field operations are in compliance with bargaining unit contracts.
  2. Performs ongoing evaluations and assessments of each Bus Driver's proficiency and adherence to all applicable laws, regulations, policies and procedures, through direct observation and monitoring of 2-way radio communications.
  3. Coordinates and schedules resource allocation and oversees shuttle transportation operations for special events at university venues, as appropriate. This includes events scheduled on weekdays, evenings, and weekends.
  4. Reviews special event shuttle service requests to determine capability and capacity and conducts dry-runs of the bus routes. Conducts wrap up review at the completion of each event to ensure best practices were followed.
  5. Conducts new Bus Driver orientation and training. This includes review of current department and division policies and procedures, pre-/post-trip inspections, wheelchair lift operations, bus routes and procedures, fueling operations, and 2-way radio protocol.
  6. Provides initial supervisory response to routine and emergency situations, to include interface and coordination with involved Bus Driver, customers, police, and emergency medical personnel. Coordinates all required reporting and post-accident/incident procedures. Reports activity to manager in timely and thorough manner.
  7. Performs in the capacity of bus driver during the shift, providing safe and efficient transportation to the University community and its visitors.
  8. Provides functional backup, troubleshooting, and support to drivers as appropriate; resolves problems and makes routine operational decisions in consultation with management.
  9. Participates in the development of operating goals and objectives for the unit; recommends, implements, and administers methods and procedures to enhance operations, as appropriate to the unit.
  10. Assists in the annual budget planning process and in the identification of and planning for longer-term operational needs.
  11. Compiles and prepares statistical spreadsheets and actvity reports for management.
  12. Maintains records including rider logs, statistical data related to transportation system usage, and bus maintenance records.
  13. Works closely with the Transportation Safety Committee on post-accident/incident reviews, on-going prevention of workplace injuries, resolving safety issues, making improvements, and creating a safety awareness culture.
  14. Performs and/or oversees performance of routine vehicle inspection and maintenance, to include checking oil, fuel, brakes, lights, windshield wipers, and water and tire pressures.
  15. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED; at least 5 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
  • Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Conditions of Employment

  • Must pass a pre-employment criminal background check.
  • Ability to obtain a Valid New Mexico Commercial Driver's License (CDL).
  • As a CDL driver, the employee will be required to comply with all provisions of DOT Regulation 49 CFR Parts 40 and 382, including random drug and alcohol testing.
  • Must obtain passenger endorsement to CDL within 90 days from date of hire.
  • Successful candidate must submit to post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history check.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

  • Work involves considerable exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.
  • Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions.
  • Light physical effort; requires handling of average-weight objects up to 10 lbs or some standing and/or walking.

The University of New Mexico provides all training required by OSHA to ensure employee safety.
