Summary

Receives incoming calls for police and security services, dispatches officers as appropriate, and monitors police radio alarms. Documents police and security service requests in an electronic records management and dispatch system. Operates National Crime Information Center (NCIC) console, a computer aided mobile dispatch system, and Zetron interoperable radio console.

Duties and Responsibilities

1. Receives calls concerning crimes, emergencies, and other requests for police assistance; monitors and responds to 911 calls from the University system, as well as from campus "Blue Light" emergency telephones.
2. Operates a National Crime Information Center (NCIC) console, a computer aided mobile dispatch (CAD) system, and a Zetron interoperable radio console.
3. Monitors fire and burglar alarms and alarm systems for all university buildings.
4. Broadcasts orders to patrol officers in vicinity to investigate complaint or request when appropriate; relays instructions or questions from remote units.
5. Coordinates departmental paging in the event of a campus emergency.
6. Researches, prepares, and directs tax studies for internal and external sources.
7. Relays radio and telephone messages between police officers and the community.
8. Performs receptionist duties; responds to questions from walk-in and telephone traffic.
9. Controls access to Police Department secured areas; monitors the departments closed circuit camera and intercom systems.
10. Performs various clerical duties including completing the electronic dispatch log and filing police reports.
11. Serves as clearing house for University-wide emergency call lists.
12. Serves as Campus Security Authority as outlined by the Clery Act.
13. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

• High School Diploma or GED and Certification/Licensure State of New Mexico Public Safety Telecommunicator or eligibility for certification by waiver.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

• Records maintenance skills.

• Clerical, word processing, and/or office skills.
• Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
• Ability to interact and communicate with people over the telephone, often in stressful situations.
• Ability to effectively operate a Zetron interoperable radio console.
• Ability to perform multiple tasks and solve problems in a technical setting.
• Knowledge of radio dispatch regulations, procedures, protocols, and/or equipment.
• Knowledge of fire and burglar alarm systems reporting.
• Skill in the use of computers and ability to use NCIC identification and Computer Aided Dispatch software.

Conditions of Employment

• Must pass a pre-employment criminal background check.
• Must successfully maintain State of New Mexico Public Safety Telecommunicator certification.
• Must successfully complete all internal police dispatch and related training.
• Successful candidate must submit to post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history check.
• All regular, non-temporary positions assigned to this classification are represented by a labor union and subject to the terms and conditions of the CWA Collective Bargaining Agreement.
• Employees who provide services or work in patient care or clinical areas are required to be in compliance with the University's influenza vaccination requirement.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort
