The following statements are intended to describe, in broad terms, the general functions and responsibility levels characteristic of positions assigned to this classification. Summary

Under general supervision, monitors safety, health, and environmental standards for students, faculty, staff, and visitors. Reports non-compliance or hazardous conditions found. Monitors and coordinates campus environmental health and safety programs, including safety inspections, accident investigations, and safety training. Provides personal, equipment, and real property security on campus, including escort services and other basic public assistance services as needed. Performs routine security and public safety patrol duties. Provides first-line response, emergency management, and/or referral for emergency services, as required.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Provides guidance and information regarding regulatory compliance and safety rules, protocols, and procedures to ensure the safety of students, faculty and staff as mandated by all applicable local, state, and federal agencies.
  2. Responds to emergency situations involving hazardous materials, fire/smoke incidents, or unknown hazards. Monitors for and reports irregularities, such as security breaches, safety hazards, and emergency situations; contacts emergency responders, such as police, fire, and/or ambulance personnel, as required.
  3. Conducts routine and follow-up environmental health, safety and hazard inspections of university facilities. Performs hazard analyses and recommends mitigation procedures.
  4. Patrols and monitors campus buildings and parking areas. Examines doors, windows, and gates; monitors campus buildings and parking areas for unauthorized persons and/or suspicious activities. Approaches suspicious persons and/or notifies police, as appropriate. Monitors and retrieves data from surveillance systems.
  5. Enforces campus rules and involves internal and external agencies for additional support, enforcement, and/or follow up, as needed. Provides escort services for visitors, students, staff, and faculty.
  6. Participates in the campus safety committee. Leads the development and implementation of safety programs and makes recommendations for correcting unsafe conditions and actions. Analyzes accident and incident reports for trends.
  7. Assists with monitoring and recording functionality and location of fire extinguishers, fire alarm systems, fire suppression systems, special ventilation systems, and/or other safety-related items
  8. Utilizes a variety of methods and equipment to gather data, maintain records, and provide reports to branch campus leadership. Develops and submits recommendations to campus leadership to maintain compliance with all applicable rules and regulations.
  9. Stays up-to-date regarding best practices and changes related to campus and environmental safety rules, protocols, and procedures and educates campus community regarding changes, updates, and/or new regulations.
  10. Participates in the development and implementation of department safety work order tracking and reporting.
  11. Assists in evaluating, collecting, preparing, and inventorying hazardous chemicals for transport and disposal.
  12. Acts as the primary liaison for environmental health and safety issues between Albuquerque EHS and the assigned branch campus.
  13. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree; at least 3 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
  • Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
  • Knowledge of emergency and hazard response procedures and protocols.
  • Knowledge of public security codes, policies, and regulations.
  • Knowledge of federal, state and local safety regulations, protocols, and/or procedures.
  • Ability to develop, implement, and enforce safety programs and protocols.
  • Ability to successfully conduct security patrols without direct supervision.
  • Skill in performing building security and lock procedures.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, flexibility, and customer service orientation.
  • Ability to gather data, compile information, and prepare reports.
  • Skill in performing safety inspections ensuring compliance with OSHA and NFPA safety standards.
  • Knowledge of transport and disposal procedures for safe handling of hazardous chemicals and/or radioactive materials.
  • Ability to operate, test and/or repair monitoring, sampling and/or analytical equipment and instruments.
  • Ability to complete routine paperwork.
  • Skill in the use of personal computers and related software applications.

Distinguishing Characteristics

    Position requires: a) performing standard environmental data collection and analyses using specialized equipment and instruments; b) testing and evaluation of environmental and safety systems, procedures, and equipment for compliance with applicable federal and state rules and regulations; c) appropriate and effective response to emergencies and/or hazardous materials, events, and situations; d) preparation of standard reports and documents, and preparation of remedial recommendations.

Conditions of Employment

  • Successful candidate must submit to post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history check.
  • Employees who provide services or work in patient care or clinical areas are required to be in compliance with the University's influenza vaccination requirement.
  • Possession of a valid New Mexico driver's license is a requirement for this job.
  • Must pass a pre-employment criminal background check.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

  • Work involves moderate exposure to extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes and chemical vapors, biohazards, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.
  • Considerable physical effort. Requires handling of objects that can weigh up to 50 lbs (or greater mass requiring mechanical assistance). Standing/walking may occur more than 50% of time.
  • Work environment involves exposure to potentially dangerous materials and situations that require following extensive safety precautions and may include the use of protective equipment.

The University of New Mexico provides all training required by OSHA to ensure employee safety.
