Summary

Provides personal, equipment, and real property security in assigned area. Provides information, directions, and escort service as needed. May be assigned to a specific zone or geographical work area.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Patrols assigned areas on foot or in a vehicle to ensure personal, building, and equipment security.
  2. Examines doors, windows, and gates to determine that they are secure.
  3. Informs and warns violators of rule infractions, such as loitering, smoking, or carrying forbidden articles.
  4. Provides escort services for visitors, students, staff, faculty, and individuals responsible for transportation of monies to or from university depositories as required.
  5. Provides public assistance, including lockout services and information.
  6. Watches for and reports irregularities, such as fire hazards, leaking water pipes, and security doors left unlocked; sounds alarm in case of fire or presence of unauthorized persons.
  7. Performs periodic checks of emergency call boxes and/or street lights to ensure proper functioning; reports malfunctions as required.
  8. Prepares routine, standardized reports.
  9. May be required to drive an institutional vehicle, providing safe and efficient transportation to University community and visitors.
  10. Serves as Campus Security Authority as outlined by the Clery Act.
  11. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED; no previous experience required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Ability to resolve customer complaints and concerns.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to gather data, compile information, and prepare reports.
  • Ability to understand and follow specific instructions and procedures.
  • Ability to drive motor vehicles.
  • Ability to understand and follow safety procedures.
  • Skill in providing protection services to individuals on campus.
  • Ability to detect problems and report information to appropriate personnel.
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local traffic laws and regulations governing the operation of a commercial passenger vehicle.
  • Skill in utilizing building security and lock systems and procedures.

Conditions of Employment

  • A valid New Mexico driver's license will be required if a motor vehicle must be operated on the job.
  • Must pass a pre-employment criminal background check.
  • All regular, non-temporary positions assigned to this classification are represented by a labor union and subject to the terms and conditions of the CWA Collective Bargaining Agreement.
  • Successful candidate must submit to post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history check.
  • Employees who provide services or work in patient care or clinical areas are required to be in compliance with the University's influenza vaccination requirement.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

  • Moderate physical activity. Requires handling of average-weight objects up to 25 pounds or standing and/or walking for more than four (4) hours per day.
  • Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions.
  • Work may involve moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.

The University of New Mexico provides all training required by OSHA to ensure employee safety.
