Summary
Under general supervision, advises, assists, and trains employees at all levels regarding radiation safety compliance. Audits, monitors, investigates, and reports radiation safety hazards.
Duties and Responsibilities
Participates in the development and implementation of university-wide radiation safety programs.
Provides general advice to the university community regarding safety protocols and procedures to ensure regulatory compliance as mandated by local, state, and federal agencies.
Conducts training and orientation sessions for employees to minimize potential safety hazards, including exposure to radiation.
Oversees the collection, correlation, and dissemination of safety data; keeps detailed records of dose histories, bioassays, x-ray equipment, overexposures, and instrument calibrations.
Assists in responding to emergency situations involving hazardous materials, radiation, or fire and smoke incidents; prepares reports of findings and submits recommendations.
May monitor and instruct medical patients receiving exposure to hazardous substances during treatment procedures.
May lead and/or guide the work of lower level safety technicians and/or student employees.
Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
Minimum Job Requirements
Bachelor's degree; at least 3 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Knowledge of federal, state and local safety regulations, protocols, and/or procedures.
Knowledge of radiation safety procedures, standards, and protocols.
Ability to develop, implement, and enforce safety programs and protocols.
Skill in developing and conducting employee information/orientation sessions.
Skill in developing safety procedures and protocols.
Skill in performing safety inspections ensuring compliance with OSHA and NFPA safety standards.
Conditions of Employment
Possession of a valid New Mexico driver's license is a requirement for this job.
Successful candidate must submit to post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history check.
Working Conditions and Physical Effort
Considerable physical activity. Requires heavy physical work; heavy lifting, pushing, or pulling required of objects up to 50 pounds. Physical work is a primary part (more than 70%) of job.
Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions.
Work may involve moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.
