Summary

Directs all aspects of the campus sustainability program. Provides leadership and ongoing participation in the development, implementation, maintenance, and evaluation of campus-wide sustainability plans and projects. Provides strategic direction and day-to-day leadership on all sustainability initiatives.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Provides leadership and support for the development, implementation, maintenance, and evaluation of institutional sustainability plans and projects.
  2. Develops short- and long-term goals and action plans aligned with the University's sustainability goals. Monitors and evaluates programmatic and operational effectiveness and effects changes required for improvement.
  3. Ensures sustainability standards and requirements are met and/or exceeded in accordance with established procedures and processes.
  4. Supports campus activities to improve sustainability efforts related to education, research, creative works, athletics, operations, planning, and administration.
  5. Designs, establishes, and maintains staffing and and organizational structure to effectively accomplish the functions of the programs; recruits, employs, trains, supervises, and evaluates program staff.
  6. Oversees and/or coordinates the collection, compilation, and analysis of program activity data; develops, writes, and presents comprehensive statistical and narrative program reports.
  7. Participates in, organizes, and coordinates various internal and external committees and working groups concerned with the campus' sustainability plans.
  8. Develops and manages annual budgets for the organization and performs periodic cost and productivity analyses.
  9. Collaborates with leadership and stakeholders to successfully embed sustainable practices into building construction and renovations, operations, and maintenance.
  10. Identifies, plans, and organizes financial and operating resources necessary for the fulfillment of program requirements; develops and writes grants and funding proposals, as appropriate.
  11. Recommends and participates in the development of University policies and procedures; may serve on University planning and policy-making committees.
  12. Represents the University to various institutional divisions as well as externally to governmental agencies, vendors, students and their parents, and/or the general public.
  13. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree; at least 6 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
  • Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Advanced knowledge and understanding of pollution prevention, materials recycling, waste management and other resource conservation principles and practices.
  • Skill in examining and re-engineering operations and procedures, formulating policy, and developing and implementing new strategies and procedures.
  • Program development, management, and evaluation skills.
  • Knowledge of Federal, State, and local safety and environmental control regulations, protocols, and procedures.
  • Ability to analyze and evaluate complex issues and develop creative, responsive solutions.
  • Skill in facilitating and leading strategic planning and organizational development interventions.
  • Knowledge of organizational structure, workflow, and operating procedures.
  • Ability to make administrative/procedural decisions and judgments.
  • Skill in budget preparation and fiscal management.
  • Ability to identify and secure alternative funding/revenue sources.
  • Ability to supervise and train employees, to include organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling work assignments.
  • Outstanding interpersonal and community relations skills and the ability to communicate and work effectively within a diverse community.
  • Ability to participate in the planning and construction of new buildings, as well as major renovation and repair projects.
  • Ability to foster a cooperative work environment.

Conditions of Employment

  • Possession of a valid New Mexico driver's license is a requirement for this job.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

  • Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions.
  • No or very limited physical effort required.
  • Work involves moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.
