Summary
Provides leadership to the campus and acts to manage and implement sustainability programs, enhancing environmental stewardship within the campus community. Implements cost-effective pollution prevention, waste reduction, recycling, and other policies, systems, procedures, and practices for the university. Provides direction and leadership to internal and external constituencies on sustainability and recycling issues. Ensures University compliance with requirements mandated by relevant Federal, State, and local agencies.
Duties and Responsibilities
Promotes sustainable activities at UNM, coordinates the development of programs with the campus community to minimize waste of materials and energy, and integrates sustainability values into all aspects of the university.
Supports and engages in community initiatives, public forums, campus sustainability summits, and local and national conferences, to facilitate feedback on sustainability projects and programs.
Works with university leadership and staff to support programs to promote recycling and waste reduction on campus and to ensure compliance with applicable policies, procedures, and regulations.
Encourages incorporation of sustainable principles into all aspects of routine and planned maintenance operations, new construction projects, renovation projects, and purchasing practices, as assigned.
Manages campus sustainability and recycling awareness programs.
Utilizes a broad network of external resources in the identification, development, implementation, and/or expansion of resource conservation opportunities in such areas as pollution prevention, material recycling, and waste management.
Oversees the supervision of assigned personnel, which includes hiring, work allocation, training, and problem resolution; evaluates performance and makes recommendations for personnel actions; motivates employees to achieve peak productivity and performance.
Researches and reports on progress toward meeting the University's sustainability objectives, the state of sustainability at the University, and on key initiatives that could advance sustainability.
Designs, develops, and delivers training and education programs related to pollution prevention, hazardous materials management, recycling, and/or other resource conservation issues to internal and external constituencies; develops and disseminates related educational and resource materials.
Assists with the development and management of annual operating budgets for the unit.
Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
Minimum Job Requirements
Bachelor's degree; at least 5 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required
Advanced knowledge and understanding of pollution prevention, materials recycling, waste management and other resource conservation principles and practices.
Program development, management, and evaluation skills.
Knowledge of Federal, State, and local safety and environmental control regulations, protocols, and procedures.
Ability to analyze and evaluate complex issues and develop creative, responsive solutions.
Ability to supervise and train employees, to include organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling work assignments.
Ability to foster a cooperative work environment.
Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
Ability to gather data, compile information, and prepare reports.
Records maintenance skills.
Conditions of Employment
Possession of a valid New Mexico driver's license is a requirement for this job.
Working Conditions and Physical Effort
Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions.
No or very limited physical effort required.
Work involves moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.
