Summary

Supervises the operational maintenance activities of the campus grounds and landscape areas which may include recreational and athletic fields. Oversees the daily activities of grounds and landscaping paraprofessional and service personnel. Must be able to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends.

Duties and Responsibilities

1. Supervises the campus turf and irrigation operations, exterior landscape and flower beds, greenhouse and nursery operations.
2. Supervises equipment operations, trash removal, equipment maintenance, and landscape debris recycling.
3. Implements detailed landscape plans.
4. Supervises personnel which typically includes recommendations for hiring, firing, performance evaluation, training, work allocation, and problem resolution.
5. Develops operating goals and objectives for the unit; implements and administers methods and procedures to enhance operations, as appropriate to the unit.
6. Develops confidentiality recordkeeping procedures and manages appropriate department records in accordance with applicable regulations, policies, and standards.
7. Assists in the annual budget planning process and regularly monitors expenditures.
8. Assists in planning snow removal operations and makes personnel assignments for operating snow removal equipment.
9. Responds to inquiries and researches and resolves problems related to transactions handled by the unit; serves as liaison with other constituencies in the resolution of day-to-day administrative and operational issues.
10. Makes appropriate modifications and/or adjustments to landscape in order to ensure compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) regulations.
11. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

• High school diploma or GED; at least 3 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
• Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

• Skill in the use of computers, preferably in a PC, Windows-based operating environment.
• Knowledge of chemical applications, insect and disease control, plant nutrition and pruning methods.
• Records maintenance skills.

Conditions of Employment

• Possession of a valid New Mexico driver's license is a requirement for this job.
• Must pass a pre-employment criminal background check.
• Position may require a New Mexico Commercial Driver's License (CDL). If so, possession of a valid CDL must be obtained within one year of the date of hire.
• As a CDL driver, the employee will be required to comply with all provisions of DOT Regulation 49 CFR Parts 40 and 382, including random drug and alcohol testing.
• Successful candidate must submit to post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history check.
• NM Irrigation License (CID) JS-MS-6 and City of Albuquerque Backflow Prevention Certificate may be required within one year of date of hire.
• Possession of State of NM Ornamental and Turf Pest Control Licenses in Insecticides and fungicides (3A), and Herbicides (3B) must be attained within one year of date of hire.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

• Work involves considerable exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.
• Extensive physical activity. Requires strenuous physical work; heavy lifting, pushing, or pulling required of objects over 50 pounds.
• Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions.

The University of New Mexico provides all training required by OSHA to ensure employee safety.
