Summary
Maintains, repairs, and installs irrigation systems including replacing valves, controllers, transmitters, switches, and contacts under the direct oversight of a licensed journeyman plumber (or journeyman pipe fitter or sprinkler license for applicable activities).
Duties and Responsibilities
Turns irrigation systems on and off as designated.
Repairs and replaces hoses, pipes, and numerous types of sprinkler heads and fixtures.
Operates timers, clocks, and controls for sprinklers.
Replaces or repairs irrigation valves.
Installs or repairs irrigation lines.
Test backflow devices.
May assist in various maintenance activities as required.
Ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies; promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices.
Performs snow removal, as required.
Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
Minimum Job Requirements
High school diploma or GED; at least 2 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified. Certifications/Licensure: State of New Mexico Irrigation license (CID-JS)
Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required
Ability to install, operate, troubleshoot and repair manual and/or computerized irrigation systems.
Ability to follow routine verbal and written instructions.
Ability to understand and follow specific instructions and procedures.
Ability to perform irrigation tasks such as operate timers, clocks, and controls for sprinklers.
Knowledge of manual and/or computerized irrigation systems.
Ability to read, understand, follow, and enforce safety procedures.
Distinguishing Characteristics
Position requires: a) Operating electrical and plumbing components such as timers, clocks, sprinkler controls, valves, backflow devices, and other accessories; b) Replacing/repairing hoses, pipes, valves, controllers, piping, and sprinkler heads; c) turning irrigation systems off and on; and d) installing and/or repairing irrigation lines.
Conditions of Employment
A valid New Mexico driver's license will be required if a motor vehicle must be operated on the job.
Possession of a current State of New Mexico Irrigation License (CID-JS).
If this position is assigned to the Athletics Department, either administratively or functionally, compliance with all NCAA rules and regulations is required.
Must maintain certification and/or licensure status.
Successful candidate must submit to post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history check.
All regular, non-temporary positions assigned to this classification are represented by a labor union and subject to the terms and conditions of the CWA Collective Bargaining Agreement.
Employees who provide services or work in patient care or clinical areas are required to be in compliance with the University's influenza vaccination requirement.
Working Conditions and Physical Effort
Work involves considerable exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.
Extensive physical activity. Requires strenuous physical work; heavy lifting, pushing, or pulling required of objects over 50 pounds.
Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions.
The University of New Mexico provides all training required by OSHA to ensure employee safety.
