Summary

Under general supervision, performs pest management practices to interior campus structures. Documents structural, procedural, and maintenance practices which lead to pest infestations. Monitors pest incidence. Applies pesticides as necessary.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Installs and regularly inspects arthropod trapping devices.
  2. Makes accurate genus and species identification and recommends least toxic treatments.
  3. Performs building inspections to identify structural, maintenance, and procedural modifications which will decrease pest incidence.
  4. Maintains detailed inspection and required chemical usage reports for campus structures.
  5. Performs regular chemical inventories and maintains labels and MSDS sheets for chemicals used in IPM.
  6. Applies chemicals, baits, traps, and other pest control components including restricted chemicals in a safe, effective, and appropriate manner.
  7. Performs snow removal duties, as required.
  8. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED; at least 3 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified. Certification/Licensure: State of New Mexico 7A License - Structural Pest Control; State of New Mexico 7B License - Vertebrate Animal Control.
  • Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Knowledge of arthropod taxonomy.
  • Skill in the use of personal computers and related software applications.
  • Knowledge of integrated pest management practices.
  • Records maintenance skills.
  • Knowledge of building construction materials and arthropod behavior.
  • Ability to use hand and power tools applicable to trade.
  • Knowledge of fertilizer and/or pesticide applications.
  • Knowledge of biological specimen preservation techniques.

Conditions of Employment

  • Possession of a valid New Mexico driver's license is a requirement for this job.
  • Successful candidate must submit to post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history check.
  • Must obtain State of NM 3A License - Ornamental and Turf Pest Control: Insecticides and State of NM 3B License - Ornamental and Turf Pest Control: Herbicides within 6 months from date of hire.
  • Employees who provide services or work in patient care or clinical areas are required to be in compliance with the University's influenza vaccination requirement.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

  • Work involves considerable exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.
  • Work environment involves exposure to potentially dangerous materials and situations that require following extensive safety precautions and may include the use of protective equipment.
  • Extensive physical activity. Requires handling of objects up to 50 pounds or standing and/or walking for more than six (6) hours per day.

The University of New Mexico provides all training required by OSHA to ensure employee safety.
