Summary

Under general supervision, performs a wide variety of treatment planning and quality assurance services related to radiation therapy. Designs treatment plans that meet prescribed orders while balancing patient well-being. May participate in research and/or development of new radiation therapy procedures.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Generates patient treatment plans; views patient imaging data, develops patient contours, creates and calculates patient treatments, and evaluates the treatment plan's adherence to prescribed dose constraints.
  2. Evaluates patient treatment plans for potential errors using established quality assurance checklists. Ensures existing quality assurance checklists remain up-to-date with best practices and professional standards.
  3. Performs calculations to ensure accurate delivery of prescribed treatment, documents all pertinent information in the patient record and verifies accuracy of all calculations by an approved method.
  4. Works closely with radiation therapists and supports the implementation of patient treatment plans, including the correct use of immobilization devices, compensators, wedges, field arrangement, and other treatment or imaging parameters.
  5. Participates in patient treatment planning simulations. Supervises, performs, or assists in the planning, implementation, and production of necessary immobilization devices and beam modifying devices.
  6. Supervises, performs, or assists simulations and tumor localization using specified imaging modalities.
  7. Supervises, performs, or assists with the application of specific methods of patient and/or beam dosimetry as directed by the medical physicist in a range of special procedures.
  8. Participates in clinical and departmental research and development initiatives and provides assistance in the implementation of new technologies, when appropriate.
  9. Participates in planning and policy setting for the services and operations of the unit; implements, communicates, and monitors policy and procedures relevant to the unit.
  10. Participates in departmental quality improvement efforts in order to improve various aspects of clinical operations.
  11. Ensures all applicable federal, state, and professional laws, regulations, and standards are followed.
  12. May train and supervise students and other employees engaged in similar activities.
  13. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree; no prior experience required. Certification/Licensure: Medical Dosimetry certification or eligible to obtain medical dosimetry certification with eligibility no older than two (2) years. Must obtain medical dosimetry certification within one (1) year of hire.
  • Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
  • Ability to monitor and/or maintain quality control standards.
  • Ability to read and interpret imaging data and utilize image management systems.
  • Ability to generate patient treatment plans for patients, based on prescribed dosages.
  • Ability to calibrate and operate radiation detection instruments.
  • Knowledge of patient immobilization devices and related treatment needs for radiation patients.
  • Ability to safely handle sealed radioactive sources.
  • Knowledge of radiation therapy methodologies, technologies, equipment, procedures, and standards.
  • Ability to collect, maintain and utilize statistics in order to help monitor and improve clinical processes.

Conditions of Employment

  • Must pass a pre-employment criminal background check.
  • Successful candidate must submit to post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history check.
  • Must maintain certification and/or licensure status.
  • Employees who provide services or work in patient care or clinical areas are required to be in compliance with the University's influenza vaccination requirement.
  • CPR Certified.
  • May be required to submit immunization records for review for required vaccines and TB testing.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

  • Work is performed in an interior medical/clinical environment.
  • Work may involve moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.
  • Moderate physical activity. Requires handling of average-weight objects up to 25 pounds or standing and/or walking for more than four (4) hours per day.
  • Work environment involves exposure to potentially dangerous materials and situations that require following extensive safety precautions and may include the use of protective equipment.

The University of New Mexico provides all training required by OSHA to ensure employee safety.
