Summary
Under indirect supervision, maintains evidentiary chain of custody and integrity of deceased persons, evidence, and property from intake to release in accordance with regulations and guidelines. Ensures accuracy and completeness of documentation, which must be handled with high levels of sensitivity and appropriate discretion. Provides guidance and training to staff, student employees, and/or interns.
Duties and Responsibilities
Performs and reviews the completion of the collection, inventory, preservation, and release of valuables, personal belongings, and evidence and materials for case documentation and for legal chain of evidence.
Provides day-to-day technical guidance and training to lower level staff/student employees, and/or interns performing related work, as appropriate to operational needs.
Performs and reviews the completion of the logging and tracking of documentation; participates in the development and revision of operating procedures, ensuring strict compliance with established protocols, processes, and regulations.
Communicates and interacts with internal and external partners.
Receives, documents, transports, stores, and releases bodies of deceased persons ensuring appropriate confidentiality and following established protocols.
Monitors and tracks temperature of body storage and evidence units.
Maintains cleanliness and organization of work areas; maintains and stocks inventory and supplies.
Ensures that workplace is secure by monitoring restricted areas via cameras and security doors and equipment is in working order, documenting and reporting issues.
Practices safety, environmental, and/or infection control methods.
May prepare daily or specialized reports.
Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
Minimum Job Requirements
High school diploma or GED; at least 2 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required
Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing and work effectively with others.
Ability to provide on-the-job and technical guidance and training to staff.
Ability to maintain quality, safety, and/or infection control standards.
Ability to complete routine paperwork.
Skill in the use of personal computers and related software applications.
Ability to gather data, compile information and prepare reports.
Knowledge of legal and policy requirements related to the gathering, safekeeping and documentation of evidence.
Knowledge of inventory management practices.
Knowledge of cameras and photographic procedures.
Ability to work with distressing and/or unpleasant odors, procedures and circumstances.
Ability to make administrative and procedural decisions and judgments on sensitive, confidential issues.
Ability to work both independently and in a team environment.
Ability to maintain confidentiality of records and information.
Knowledge of sterile procedures.
Distinguishing Characteristics
Position requires: a) training and technical guidance of lower level staff, student employees and/or interns; b) responsibility for performing and reviewing the completion of the collection, documentation, and release of bodies of deceased persons, evidence, and property; c) participation in the development and revision of operating procedures.
Conditions of Employment
May be required to submit immunization records for review for required vaccines and TB testing.
UNM will provide Hepatitis vaccination, candidate may decline vaccination through declination form or may provide record of vaccination from previous employer.
Must pass a pre-employment criminal background check.
Successful candidate must submit to post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history check.
Employees who provide services or work in patient care or clinical areas are required to be in compliance with the University's influenza vaccination requirement.
All regular, non-temporary positions assigned to this classification are represented by a labor union and subject to the terms and conditions of the US-UNM Collective Bargaining Agreement.
Working Conditions and Physical Effort
Work involves almost constant exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, toxic chemicals, biohazardous materials, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, and/or loud noises.
Extensive physical activity. Requires strenuous physical work; heavy lifting, pushing, or pulling required of objects over 50 pounds.
Work environment involves exposure to potentially dangerous materials and situations that require following extensive safety precautions and may include the use of protective equipment.
Will work in a death environment with occasional noxious odors.
Will work with blood or blood-borne pathogens and will require OSHA training.
The University of New Mexico provides all training required by OSHA to ensure employee safety.
