Summary

Independently implements complex radiologic research procedures requiring specialized knowledge, training, and skills in support of the provision of diagnostic and/or therapeutic services to a specified patient population. May work in a research or clinical environment.

Duties and Responsibilities

1. Develops specific imaging parameters on a variety of imaging modalities and platforms.
2. Prepares patient for radiologic imaging procedures as appropriate in accordance with imaging protocol and trial requirements; explains procedures to patients and assists patient throughput.
3. Determines appropriate methodology and techniques to use in administering procedures; adjusts equipment as appropriate; implements and oversees complex clinical imaging in accordance with procedures and standards.
4. Ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies; promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices.
5. Plans, implements, and maintains data collection and analysis systems; may coordinate the collection and analysis of research data.
6. Provides consultation and reports to clinicians, faculty, investigators, research subjects, research coordinators, sponsors, credentialing bodies and ancillary departments.
7. May coordinate the activities of a multi-disciplinary team of research coordinators, clinical radiology technologists, radiology schedulers, medical physicists and support staff.
8. May coordinate patient registration, scheduling and billing functions for clinical imaging research.
9. May establish data transfer protocols from imaging modalities and ensures that data is transferred in accordance with research protocol.
10. May lead, allocate work, and oversee technical and/or other support staff as needed on a project basis.
11. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

• Bachelor's degree; at least 3 years of directly related experience which may include directly related certification or practicum training. Certification from the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT).
• Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

• Ability to gather data, compile information, and prepare reports.
• Ability to make administrative/procedural decisions and judgments.
• Knowledge of the physical and operational characteristics of radiologic imaging equipment.
• Ability to adjust and configure radiologic imaging equipment such as CT and/or MRI scanners, and associated facilities and devices in accordance with procedures and standards.
• Knowledge of appropriate settings for diagnostic imaging equipment, including exposure times, and safety parameters.
• Ability to read, understand, follow, and enforce safety procedures.
• Knowledge of imaging modalities including, but not limited to radiography, CT and/or MRI scanning principles, procedures, and standards.
• Ability to communicate technical information to non-technical personnel.
• Knowledge of image acquisition techniques.
• Knowledge of sterile procedures.

Distinguishing Characteristics

Position requires: a) utilization of specialized, advanced methodology and techniques in the operation of radiologic equipment, as well as CT and/or MRI scanning equipment, for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes; b) determination of appropriate procedural techniques to achieve prescribed imaging examination results; c) appropriate set up, and adjustment on a variety of imaging modalities and platforms equipment in accordance with general and individually prescribed protocol.

Conditions of Employment

• May be required to submit to annual TB and rubella screening.
• UNM will provide Hepatitis vaccination; candidate may decline vaccination through declination form or may provide record of vaccination from previous employer.
• Current American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) in Computed Tomography and/or Magnetic Resonance Imaging Licensure preferred.
• Current New Mexico Medical Imaging and Radiation Therapy Program Licensure preferred.
• Successful candidate must submit to post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history check.
• Must maintain certification status.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

• Work is performed in an interior medical/clinical environment.
• Moderate physical activity. Requires occasional handling of items up to 100 pounds.
• Work environment involves exposure to potentially dangerous materials and situations that require following extensive safety precautions and may include the use of protective equipment.

The University of New Mexico provides all training required by OSHA to ensure employee safety.
