The following statements are intended to describe, in broad terms, the general functions and responsibility levels characteristic of positions assigned to this classification. Summary

Performs radiologic procedures requiring specialized knowledge, training, and skills in support of the provision of diagnostic and/or therapeutic services to a specified patient population. May prepare and administer various chemical mixtures as appropriate to the nature of the procedures being carried out. May work in a research or clinical environment.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Prepares facilities in accordance with procedural requirements; calibrates equipment, and prepares medicine and materials as required; cleans and disinfects equipment in accordance with sterile procedures and standards.
  2. Prepares patient for radiographic, ultrasound, or CT Scan procedures as appropriate to requirements; explains procedures to patients and positions patients as appropriate to prescribed procedure; assists patients at end of procedure.
  3. Determines appropriate methodology and techniques to use in administering procedures; calibrates and adjusts equipment as appropriate; arranges immobilization and/or support devices for proper patient positioning; adjusts shields; selects appropriate film or film printing device.
  4. Follows prescribed procedure in the administration of radiography, ultrasound, or CT scans; determines appropriate calibrations and/or techniques, arranges immobilization and/or support devices, and selects appropriate film or film printing device.
  5. Develops or prints film as appropriate, in accordance with proper photographic techniques.
  6. Prepares written status reports and maintains records of work performed.
  7. Maintains stock supplies and assists administrators in determining quantities for purchase; performs general office duties such as delivering and retrieving film, recording procedure codes for billing purposes, typing forms, and scheduling patients.
  8. May take mobile unit to patient's room or emergency room to perform procedures, as appropriate to the operational context of the specific position.
  9. Ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies; promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices.
  10. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Associate's degree; at least 3 years of directly related experience which may include directly related certification or practicum training. Certification/Licensure: Certification from the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists.
  • Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Knowledge of accreditation and certification requirements and standards.
  • Records maintenance skills.
  • Ability to gather data, compile information, and prepare reports.
  • Skill in the use of personal computers and related software applications.
  • Knowledge of the physical and operational characteristics of radiographic, ultrasound, and/or CT scanning equipment.
  • Ability to calibrate and configure radiographic, ultrasound, and or CT equipment and associated facilities and devices in accordance with procedures and standards.
  • Ability to safely lift, and physically manipulate patients.
  • Knowledge of appropriate CT setting, x-ray exposure times, and safety parameters.
  • Ability to make administrative/procedural decisions and judgments.
  • Ability to read, understand, follow, and enforce safety procedures.
  • Knowledge of radiography, ultrasound, and/or CT scanning principles, procedures, and standards.
  • Ability to communicate technical information to non-technical personnel.
  • Knowledge of photographic development techniques.
  • Knowledge of sterile procedures.

Distinguishing Characteristics

    Position requires: a) utilization of specialized, advanced methodology and techniques in the operation of radiologic equipment, as well as ultrasound and/or CT scanning equipment, for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes; b) determination of appropriate procedural techniques to achieve prescribed radiographic, ultrasound, or CT scan results; c) appropriate set up, calibration, and adjustment of radiographic, ultrasound, and/or CT equipment in accordance with general and individually prescribed protocol.

Conditions of Employment

  • May be required to submit to annual TB and rubella screening.
  • UNM will provide Hepatitis vaccination, candidate may decline vaccination through declination form or may provide record of vaccination from previous employer.
  • State of New Mexico Licensure.
  • Successful candidate must submit to post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history check.
  • Must maintain certification status.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

  • Work is performed in an interior medical/clinical environment.
  • Moderate physical activity. Requires occasional handling of items up to 100 pounds.
  • Work environment involves exposure to potentially dangerous materials and situations that require following extensive safety precautions and may include the use of protective equipment.

The University of New Mexico provides all training required by OSHA to ensure employee safety.
