Summary

Under limited supervision, provides integrated technical assistance in the execution of microscopy-oriented histological processes. Performs complex histological procedures within an operating room or a research environment, and interfaces with patient care including hospital and laboratory facilities, as necessary. Oversees and ensures quality control of laboratory operations, and performs specified research protocol as appropriate.

Duties and Responsibilities

1. Supervise and train technicians, residents, or fellows in relevant and proper histology procedures, including tissue cut down, embedding, cutting, and staining.
2. Prepares and labels slides or specimens, using special cutting and specified stains, to enhance visibility under microscope as required.
3. Performs microscope-based quality assessments of stained and unstained tissue sections for subsequent diagnostic review.
4. Works directly with the surgeon or research unit director in the collection of tissue samples either in the operating room or in the research setting at clinics, hospitals and laboratories; prepares tissue sections for immediate examination, using horizontal/frozen section techniques to cut, mount, and stain specimens.
5. Interface as necessary with patient care and services, as directed by the surgeon, during surgical procedures or similarly with the research unit director for research procedures.
6. Participates in the development and execution of laboratory and/or research protocol, as appropriate to the objectives of the position.
7. Operates, maintains, and troubleshoots advanced electronic histological equipment including electronic instruments; oversees and ensures maintenance of quality, safety, and infection control standards of laboratory activities
8. Performs computerized data entry of all work performed and generates reports as required.
9. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

• High school diploma or GED; at least 6 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
• Bachelors degree in a related field from an accredited institution or American Society for Clinical Pathology Histology Technologist Certification HTL(ASCP) may be substituted for up to 4 years of experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

• Ability to process computer data and to format and generate reports.
• Ability to prepare slides and/or specimens for microscopy using established protocols and techniques.
• Ability to utilize, troubleshoot and maintain computerized laboratory and/or histological equipment.
• Ability to develop and maintain housekeeping, safety, and infection control programs, procedures, and protocols.
• Knowledge of rapid tissue processing, and of horizontal and frozen section techniques.
• Ability to perform integrated histology protocol within a surgical and research environment
• Ability to provide interface with patient care and related research in clinic, hospital and laboratory settings.
• Knowledge of the principles and procedures of laboratory research.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

• Work environment involves exposure to potentially dangerous materials and situations that require following extensive safety precautions and may include the use of protective equipment.
• Work may involve moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.
• Moderate physical activity. Requires handling of average-weight objects up to 25 pounds or standing and/or walking for more than four (4) hours per day.
