Summary

Under general supervision, operates radiologic, ultrasound, and/or CT equipment in support of the provision of diagnostic and/or therapeutic services to a specified patient population. May prepare and administer various chemical mixtures as appropriate to the nature of the procedure(s) being carried out. May work in a research or clinical environment.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Prepares patients for radiographic, ultrasound, or CT scan simulations and/or procedures, consistent with care plan.
  2. Escorts and otherwise assists patients prior to and following radiation therapy sessions; transfers immobilized patients from stretcher to treatment area, giving special care to medical life support equipment; positions patients in prescribed anatomical positions for treatment.
  3. Prepares room, calibrates equipment, and prepares medicine and materials consistent with prescribed treatments/therapies; cleans and disinfects room and equipment.
  4. Follows prescribed techniques for radiologic scans, ultrasounds, and/or CT scans; adjusts equipment; determines proper voltage, current, and desired exposure time; arranges immobilization and support devices to obtain position of patient; adjusts lead shield; selects proper film.
  5. Observes patients and machines during procedures; reports unusual occurrences and reports/records patient condition or other relevant information.
  6. Develops film in accordance with proper photographic techniques.
  7. Maintains stock supplies and assists administrators in determining quantities for purchase; performs general office duties such as delivering and retrieving film, recording procedure codes for billing purposes, typing forms, and scheduling patients.
  8. May take mobile imaging units to patient rooms or other locations to perform procedures, as appropriate to the operational context and consistent with provider requests.
  9. Ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies; promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices.
  10. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Associate's degree; no prior experience required. Certification/Licensure: American Registry of Radiologic Technology (ARRT) license and State of New Mexico Radiographic Radiologic Technologist (RRT) license.
  • Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Knowledge of radiography, ultrasound, and/or CT scanning principles, procedures, and standards.
  • Knowledge of the physical and operational characteristics of radiographic, ultrasound, and/or CT scanning equipment.
  • Ability to calibrate and configure radiographic, ultrasound, and or CT equipment and associated facilities and devices in accordance with procedures and standards.
  • Knowledge of appropriate CT settings, x-ray exposure times, and safety parameters.
  • Ability to safely lift and physically manipulate patients.
  • Ability to communicate technical information to non-technical personnel.
  • Ability to gather data, compile information, and prepare reports.
  • Records maintenance skills.
  • Knowledge of sterile procedures.
  • Ability to read, understand, follow, and enforce safety procedures.
  • Ability to make administrative/procedural decisions and judgments.
  • Knowledge of the physical and operational characteristics of radiation equipment and facilities.
  • Knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and/or kinesiology.
  • Ability to maintain quality, safety, and/or infection control standards.
  • Knowledge of radiation simulator procedures.

Conditions of Employment

  • Must pass a pre-employment criminal background check.
  • Must maintain certification status.
  • Successful candidate must submit to post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history check.
  • Must maintain certification and/or licensure status.
  • Employees who provide services or work in patient care or clinical areas are required to be in compliance with the University's influenza vaccination requirement.
  • CPR Certified.
  • May be required to submit immunization records for review for required vaccines and TB testing.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

  • Work is performed in an interior medical/clinical environment.
  • Work involves exposure to potentially dangerous materials and situations that require following extensive safety precautions and may include the use of protective equipment.
  • Considerable physical activity. Requires heavy physical work; heavy lifting, pushing, or pulling required of objects up to 50 pounds. Physical work is a primary part (more than 70%) of job.

The University of New Mexico provides all training required by OSHA to ensure employee safety.
