Summary

Under direct supervision, assists radiation therapists with treatment simulations and therapies, facilitates patient flow, assists patients receiving radiation therapy, and maintains radiographic records. Provides a wide range of clinical and non-clinical support to facilitate smooth departmental operations.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Prepares room and equipment for patients consistent with instructions provided by radiation therapists.
  2. Escorts and otherwise assists patients prior to and following radiation therapy sessions; transfers immobilized patients from stretcher to treatment area, giving special care to medical life support equipment; positions patients in prescribed anatomical positions for treatment.
  3. Observes and reports on patient progress during treatments. Assists patients prior to and following radiation therapy sessions.
  4. Assists radiation therapists with simulator procedures, in accordance with orders from attending physicians and therapists.
  5. Checks chart and patient identification for agreement.
  6. Adds patient notes, quality checklists, and patient appointments according to instructions provided by the radiation therapists.
  7. Ensures that all patient data and port films are available for quality assurance review and chart rounds.
  8. Maintains radiographic records, prepares port and simulation files to be checked by the attending physician.
  9. Performs various administrative tasks to support departmental operations; answers phone calls, maintains supplies inventory, stocks and reorders supplies as necessary, and provides therapists, physicians, and nurses requested information, including but not limited to charts, films, test results, and other treatment details.
  10. Practices all applicable safety, environmental, and/or infection control methods.
  11. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED; at least 1 year of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
  • Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and/or kinesiology.
  • Ability to observe, assess, and record symptoms, reactions, and progress.
  • Ability to understand and follow specific instructions and procedures.
  • Records maintenance skills.
  • Ability to maintain quality, safety, and/or infection control standards.
  • Knowledge of patient care charts and patient histories.
  • Ability to safely lift and physically manipulate patients.
  • Knowledge of the physical and operational characteristics of radiation equipment and facilities.
  • Ability to process x-ray port films.
  • Ability to prepare and/or maintain radiographic records and port and simulation files.
  • Knowledge of radiation simulator procedures.

Conditions of Employment

  • Must pass a pre-employment criminal background check.
  • Must maintain certification status.
  • Successful candidate must submit to post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history check.
  • Must maintain certification and/or licensure status.
  • Employees who provide services or work in patient care or clinical areas are required to be in compliance with the University's influenza vaccination requirement.
  • CPR Certified.
  • May be required to submit immunization records for review for required vaccines and TB testing.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

  • Work is performed in an interior medical/clinical environment.
  • Work involves exposure to potentially dangerous materials and situations that require following extensive safety precautions and may include the use of protective equipment.
  • Considerable physical activity. Requires heavy physical work; heavy lifting, pushing, or pulling required of objects up to 50 pounds. Physical work is a primary part (more than 70%) of job.

The University of New Mexico provides all training required by OSHA to ensure employee safety.
