Summary
Manages, supervises, and coordinates all administrative aspects of midwifery operations within a specified patient care facility. Performs outreach and professional education and development activities, as well as research development and management. Provides direction, leadership, and advice to others as a highly-specialized practitioner.
Duties and Responsibilities
Oversees all facets of the daily operations of the organizational unit, ensuring compliance with the University, state, and federal laws, policies, and regulations.
Oversees the supervision of personnel, which includes work allocation, training, promotion, enforcement of internal procedures and controls, and problem resolution; evaluates performance and makes recommendations for personnel actions; motivates employees to achieve peak productivity and performance.
Provides full-scope midwifery care to patients.
Teaches and facilitates staff in educating midwifery students, medical students, and residents in clinical and didactic settings.
Provides leadership and encouragement to staff in the pursuit and development of innovative and evaluative research projects within areas of expertise.
Provides advice and consultation on a state-wide basis with regards to the development of midwifery practices, clinical practice guidelines, and interpretation of regulations.
Oversees and coordinates informational and community outreach programs, to include research, development, and presentation.
Develops and implements systems and processes to establish and maintain records for the operating unit.
Represents the organization at various community and/or professional meetings; promotes existing and new programs and/or policies.
Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
Minimum Job Requirements
Master's degree; at least 3 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
Certification/Licensure
State of New Mexico Licensed Registered Nurse OR licensure pending as documented by temporary licensure OR current RN licensure from a state participating in the multistate privilege to practice compact with New Mexico.
State of New Mexico Certified Nurse Midwife OR licensure pending as documented by temporary licensure.
Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required
Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
Skill in the use of computers, preferably in a PC, Windows-based operating environment.
Ability to develop and maintain recordkeeping systems and procedures.
Skill in the use of personal computers and related software applications.
Knowledge of midwifery theory, procedure and standards.
Ability to plan work schedules and assign duties; ability to provide or arrange for training.
Strong verbal and written communication skills and the ability to present information effectively to groups.
Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
Skill in organizing resources and establishing priorities.
Knowledge of federal, state, and local regulations, guidelines, and standards in area of expertise.
Ability to supervise, advise, and train clinical professionals and/or students in area of expertise.
Ability to supervise and train employees, to include organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling work assignments.
Knowledge of clinical research principles and practices.
Ability to develop alternative research funding strategies.
Ability to foster a cooperative work environment.
Employee development and performance management skills.
Knowledge of faculty and/or staff hiring procedures.
Conditions of Employment
CPR Certified.
May be required to submit to annual TB and rubella screening.
UNM will provide Hepatitis vaccination, candidate may decline vaccination through declination form or may provide record of vaccination from previous employer.
Must pass a pre-employment criminal background check.
May be subject to credentialing process; must maintain credentialed status, if applicable.
Must maintain certification status.
Working Conditions and Physical Effort
Moderate physical activity. Requires handling of average-weight objects up to 25 pounds or standing and/or walking for more than four (4) hours per day.
Work environment involves exposure to potentially dangerous materials and situations that require following extensive safety precautions and may include the use of protective equipment.
Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment.
The University of New Mexico provides all training required by OSHA to ensure employee safety.
