Summary

Manages a team of Neonatal Practice Specialists providing mid-level medical and patient care services to at-risk newborn infants and their families. Provides administrative management and oversight of direct patient care, and acts as liaison between the Neonatal Practice service and other provider services.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Oversees the supervision of personnel, which includes work allocation, training, promotion, enforcement of internal procedures and controls, and problem resolution; evaluates performance and makes recommendations for personnel actions; motivates employees to achieve peak productivity and performance.
  2. Provides liaison between the service and a range of other patient care providers and components, including hospitals and outside agencies, to ensure smooth operations and working relationships.
  3. Manages statewide transport of sick pre-term and newborn infants via air and ground to UNM hospital and return transports to referral hospitals.
  4. Professionally oversees clinical direct patient care management and/or transport, and patient education; functions as a practicing Neonatal Practice Specialist, as appropriate to scheduling requirements.
  5. Writes, reviews, and updates protocols, job descriptions, and other paperwork; facilitates communications among service members.
  6. Maintains established institutional policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance program, and safety, environmental and infection control standards.
  7. Performs administrative management functions, to include budget management, statistics and reporting, billing and medicaid tracking, and related activities.
  8. Represents the unit at internal and external committees, meetings, and conferences.
  9. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Master's degree in Nursing or in Science with Physician Assistant Science emphasis; at least 3 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified. Certification/Licensure State of New Mexico Licensed Registered Nurse; Current national certification as a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner or Pediatrics Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant.
  • Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Ability to maintain quality, safety, and/or infection control standards.
  • Knowledge of accreditation and certification requirements and standards.
  • Knowledge of patient care requirements of at-risk newborns.
  • Knowledge of related accreditation and certification requirements.
  • Skill in organizing resources and establishing priorities.
  • Skill in preparing and maintaining patient records.
  • Ability to create, compose, and edit written materials.
  • Knowledge of project management principles, practices, techniques, and tools.
  • Ability to supervise and train employees, to include organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling work assignments.
  • Knowledge of community health services and agencies.
  • Ability to foster a cooperative work environment.
  • Knowledge of intensive care and NRP/CPR procedures and techniques for newborn infants .
  • Employee development and performance management skills.
  • Knowledge of neonatal transport procedures, standards, and equipment.
  • Ability to evaluate, develop and maintain clinical protocol and procedure.
  • Knowledge of faculty and/or staff hiring procedures.

Conditions of Employment

  • CPR Certified.
  • May be required to submit to annual TB and rubella screening.
  • UNM will provide Hepatitis vaccination, candidate may decline vaccination through declination form or may provide record of vaccination from previous employer.
  • Must pass a pre-employment criminal background check.
  • May be subject to credentialing process; must maintain credentialed status, if applicable.
  • Must maintain certification status.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

  • Work involves considerable exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.
  • Work environment involves exposure to potentially dangerous materials and situations that require following extensive safety precautions and may include the use of protective equipment.
  • Will work with blood or blood-borne pathogens and will require OSHA training.
  • Work involves moderate physical effort; requires occasional handling and manipulation of equipment weighing in excess of 200 pounds.

The University of New Mexico provides all training required by OSHA to ensure employee safety.
