Summary

Under minimal supervision, manages the operations of a pharmaceutical dispensing facility. Develops and implements quality, customer service, safety, environmental and/or infection control policies, procedures and standards. Supervises pharmacy staff and provides direction and advice to health professionals as a highly-specialized practitioner.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Oversees all facets of the daily operations of the organizational unit, ensuring compliance with the University, state, and federal laws, policies, and regulations.
  2. Participates in the development of annual operating budgets and provides fiscal direction to the unit.
  3. Develops or assists with the development and implementation of policies and procedures consistent with those of the organization to ensure efficient and safe operation of the unit.
  4. Prepares and/or oversees preparation and dispensing of pharmaceuticals to patients or medical practitioners; makes decisions regarding appropriate generic substitution of prescribed pharmaceuticals.
  5. Consults with patients and/or medical practitioners on drug indications or contraindications, dosage and administration, drug interactions, and side effects; provides other drug and pharmaceutical information as appropriate.
  6. Advises medical practitioners on various aspects of prescribing through meetings, newsletters, and other forms of verbal and written communication.
  7. Develops and implements systems and processes to establish and maintain records for the operating unit.
  8. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Pharmacy or Pharm.D.; at least 3 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified. Certification/Licensure State of New Mexico Licensed Pharmacist.
  • Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Ability to develop and maintain recordkeeping systems and procedures.
  • Skill in the use of computers, preferably in a PC, Windows-based operating environment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Skill in the use of personal computers and related software applications.
  • Skill in organizing resources and establishing priorities.
  • Skill in examining and re-engineering operations and procedures, formulating policy, and developing and implementing new strategies and procedures.
  • Ability to clearly communicate medical information to professional practitioners and/or the general public.
  • Ability to supervise and train employees, to include organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling work assignments.
  • Knowledge of budgeting cost estimating, and fiscal management principles and procedures.

Conditions of Employment

  • May require discipline-specific licensure and/or professional certification, as specified by the department in the preferences.
  • Must pass a pre-employment criminal background check.
  • May be subject to credentialing process; must maintain credentialed status, if applicable.
  • Must maintain certification status.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

  • No or very limited physical effort required.
  • No or very limited exposure to physical risk.
  • Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment.
